Tommy Boy tribute car build The goal here is to end up with a little bit more modern version of the car used in the movie Tommy Boy but still remain true to the movie.

Drivers side floor spot welds are all ground down and sprayed black to prevent any flash rust.

Drivers side subframe connector is ground to fit,it’s not a perfect fit but it’s pretty darned good, one spot in the back where I put my fingers has a 1/4” gap.

Due to a piece of something in my eye and a trip to the ER to get it flushed out and the scratch it left in my cornea I took the night off. Bright sunlight irritated it.

Anyway, couple hours in the garage and all my plug welds are complete and the grinding has begun.

11 more spots welds to grind on the drivers side and it’s done, here is how the rear footwell looks ground with a little paint on it to protect it from rust.

About 50 plug welds away from being completely done with welding the floor in.
Been doing some grinding as I go but there is two to three hours of that left to do.

Not sure if I am done for the night or not but for now it’s break time.

Back to work tomorrow night :-(

The grinder and I are going to become one 😪

Every so often I get a beautiful plug weld but it’s the exception not the rule,I do have it so that I am not pushing weld out the bottom but still getting good penetration, that’s a win.

35 more plugs and the drivers side main floor pan is welded, another hour or so of dressing up the welds and I can move to the other side.

200 more like this one would be good.

New welder,new learning curve.
So this Lincoln is a much more powerful machine than my Miller 130 and I have very little time on it,let the learning curve begin!

You can see from the top side what should be a round weld looks like a kidney bean, had the welder to hot and had to chase burn through.

Now the bottom is the funny side,I started with the welder hot because I wanted to be sure and penetrate the bottom metal,if you don’t get good penetration the spot weld will actually pop off with very little effort.

If I don’t get a handle on this quickly I will have a week of grinding the back sides of my welds but I will never worry about the weld being strong.

Weld through primer drying, might just get this done before I go back to work.

The prep work is where most of your time is spent, drilled over 200 holes so far and still not done.
Frame rails are all cleaned up and painted with high temp paint, now more prep! Have to grind a small area to bare metal where every single weld will be and then spray it with weld through primer,as long as I don’t run out I may just be able to start welding.

07/16/2019

198 holes drilled in the floor pan,53 in the left side rear footwell and 51 in the right side rear footwell.
Tonight everything getting covered up by the floor will be painted and or coated with weld through primer and the welding begins!

Car has been hit in the passenger side in the past and hacked back together, good news is that this really doesn’t add any extra work to fix somebody else’s hackery because I was replacing the entire quarter panel anyway.

07/15/2019

Late start tonight, working on getting on all the holes drilled so that the plug welding can begin.
Drivers side rear pan has 46 holes to be plug welded, two holes above the frame rail flange that need welded up and all the self tapper screw holes welded shut.

Kinda curious how many plug welds there will be in total for all three pieces of the floor.

Still working on the other rear section, once all those holes are done I will remove the main floor and start drilling on it,should be welding by Tuesday or Wednesday.

Jeez, spent the day running back and forth across the river to the neighboring state doing brakes on a relatives car in the heat and then a nap, must still be half asleep yet because while looking at the picture (not the actual piece) I see I forgot to put holes going up the transmission tunnel!
Will be an even 50 holes in 10 more minutes.

07/14/2019

Just wanted to give people who have never done this an idea of how involved just one little section can be,this is the driver side rear floor section,it’s probably one foot by two foot and about to be riddled with holes to be plug welded in place.

07/14/2019

At the rate I am going I just might get the floor welded in and done before I go back to work but what a pain in the ass!
Pulled the floor back out to hammer and dolly a few areas,it’s starting to fit like it should.
At one point tonight all three floor pieces were in place and screwed down so that I could crawl underneath and scribe lines around all brackets and frame rails so that I can the floor and know where to drill holes to be plug welded.
Before I unscrewed anything I spent some time cutting and grinding to get the drivers side subframe connector in place, got the gaps pretty small ,that will cut down the time it takes to lay down six feet of weld per side.

Spent some time today changing where the car sits on the stands along with making sure it is level side to side, got it within an 1/8” inch.
Been grinding away and now test fitting the floor pan and rear footwells.
Still a lot of work just to finish the floors but seeing it in there gives a guy hope.

Passenger side 1/4 panel has been replaced before and much of it is new metal over old metal, judging by the metal inside the car where the window crank is I would say sometime in its life it was hit hard, luckily I have a bunch of that panel that got mangled but it’s just another section that needs attention.

One more night at work then back to it,did get the car sitting better which took the sag out and made the door gap better.

Checked the garage before I left for work tonight,it was 84 outside and 72 in the garage 🙂

07/02/2019

Less than an hour has went by and the temp has dropped from 77 to 75,the tstat is on the opposite side of the garage from the window I put the AC in,the closer you get to the window the cooler it gets, actually got a chill standing 10’ away in the path of the air :-)

Minor trim work left but tonight the garage should be a little cooler with a lot less humidity!

Had a $4000 break down here,on the day it hit 97 out our AC in the house went out,an hour ago the completely new system install was finished up and the house is cooling, everything should be back to normal tonight and it will be a garage night!

Tonights goal is to get the car sitting right so the rear isn’t sagging and the door gap goes back to normal,if it doesn’t I bought some house jacks to lift the rear, once that’s right time to start marking the floor to let me know where to start drilling dozens on holes.

06/29/2019

Hot hot hot!
Nearly 3:30am and it’s cooled all the way down to 79 with 92% humidity.
Put the rear end back in the car but since I sold the factory rims I need to throw an old set of mags on,cannot do that untill I go buy some mag lugs and possibly some new studs to get rid of those damned left hand thread ones.
It’s always something.
I may go buy a window air for the garage.

06/20/2019

Frustration has set in,got the floor pan ready to drop in but now the rear of the car is sagging due to the way it is being supported.
Going to have to bolt the rear end back in and set it on tires to see if that corrects it,cannot weld in floors and 1/4 panels the way it is or it will be tweaked.

Took the wind out of my sails tonight.

Spent 5 days in Minnesota,4 of those were walking all day, back to work tomorrow.
I want to get something done in the garage tonight but my get up and go got up and went 😞

Been a busy day getting stuff done, the guy at the machine shop says it looks like the block is good so he will be getting started on the 470ci and I was able to get the winch mount on the trailer.

Lastnights picture was the front floorboard where the drivers left foot will rest, this one is where the passengers right foot will be.

Welded up several spots that were cut and shouldn’t have been, ground most of them and removed the convertible top frame.
As soon as I can get about five hours of free time I should be ready to test fit the floor and start figuring out where to drill about 75 holes.
Once that’s done the fenders will come off,the doors will get adjusted perfectly so that I can line up the new 1/4 panels.

Can’t wait, after that I can get the subframe connectors test fit and tacked in,then on the rotisserie it goes.
Should be able to cut the rear wheel wells in half, move the inner section to the frame and fill in the gap so that a 10” wide rim with a 12” wide tire will fit, measured lastnight and looks like it will have 15”s of room in there.

Not going to lie,I have been avoiding the car,the front of the floor pan where it meets the firewall has kept me away because I was sure how to get the scraps of metal cut away in such a tight area.
Tonight I was able to get in there with an air hammer and knock out most of the spot welds,I should have it all cleaned up tomorrow and all the spots I didn’t know I was cutting will be welded up and ground smooth, then it should be about time to test fit the new floor!

I went Sunday and bought another 400 block because the one I have had for 20yrs turned out to be bad,for the Mopar guys out there it turned out to be another “cold weather” block which really just means there is a whole lot more metal around the main bearing area and makes for a great high HP engine, almost a waste for this build but like I always say, overkill is underrated!

Monday I dropped the block off at the machine shop and picked up the 383 block I had there,he now has my crank, rods and heads so just as soon as he gets the new block cleaned up and the heads checked out he will be ordering pistons.
In a couple of months I will go pick up my 470ci aluminum headed beast for the convertible!

Looks like I have the final pieces to the puzzle.
Originally I was buying it to cut up and use the parts for the Tommy Boy car and my roadrunner but this is the most solid car I have seen in many years.

Going to cut the 1/4s off it and graft them to the convertible and when AMD releases 1/4s next year I buy a new pair and build this car.

Just got back from a 20hr trip and back to having 6 days off but to exhausted to do anything, hopefully I will get one or two nights in the garage before I go back to work.

Starting to wonder if I am ever going to make it back to the garage!
Boss called, asked us to work every day through at least the 20th!
Had one day off yesterday, slept a lot of it and then worked on a Toyota truck for my uncle.

Been spending a few minutes in the morning and the afternoon each day before and after work and was able to finish the sheet metal brake,it will bend a piece up to 51” long but has a very curved bend,I have an idea on how to fix that but it will take a few hours of my time.
One week from today I will finally get a day off.

All hell broke loose at work and they need extra help all of march, tonight is the first of 11 nights in a row, then 3 off and another 11.
Hopefully not to exhausted to get stuff done on those 3 off.

Lastnight I finished up the build part of my new sheet metal brakel, going to get it all cleaned up and painted so it will be ready to use when I need it.

One teaser pic, this is the part that holds the piece down so that the bend can be made.

02/26/2019

Looks like not much if any updates this time around, got called in to work tonight and tomorrow night, maybe I will be able to pay for the machine work being done to the engine.

Getting the new patch tack welded in place.

02/14/2019

So right out of the brake,I grabbed a square and found it was just shy of being 90 so it went back in press for just a slight more of a bend.

02/14/2019

Bent my first frame piece in the new press brake.

Grrrr,one video at a time,it speaks for itself,well I speak for it buttttt 😎
