Tommy Boy tribute car build The goal here is to end up with a little bit more modern version of the car used in the movie Tommy Boy but still remain true to the movie.

Looks like I have the final pieces to the puzzle.
Originally I was buying it to cut up and use the parts for the Tommy Boy car and my roadrunner but this is the most solid car I have seen in many years.

Going to cut the 1/4s off it and graft them to the convertible and when AMD releases 1/4s next year I buy a new pair and build this car.

Just got back from a 20hr trip and back to having 6 days off but to exhausted to do anything, hopefully I will get one or two nights in the garage before I go back to work.

The plan all along has been to put a gen 3 hemi in this thing down the road,I have a good collection of parts for it and now added an 8 speed automatic to that list.

Starting to wonder if I am ever going to make it back to the garage!
Boss called, asked us to work every day through at least the 20th!
Had one day off yesterday, slept a lot of it and then worked on a Toyota truck for my uncle.

Been spending a few minutes in the morning and the afternoon each day before and after work and was able to finish the sheet metal brake,it will bend a piece up to 51” long but has a very curved bend,I have an idea on how to fix that but it will take a few hours of my time.
One week from today I will finally get a day off.

All hell broke loose at work and they need extra help all of march, tonight is the first of 11 nights in a row, then 3 off and another 11.
Hopefully not to exhausted to get stuff done on those 3 off.

Lastnight I finished up the build part of my new sheet metal brakel, going to get it all cleaned up and painted so it will be ready to use when I need it.

One teaser pic, this is the part that holds the piece down so that the bend can be made.

Looks like not much if any updates this time around, got called in to work tonight and tomorrow night, maybe I will be able to pay for the machine work being done to the engine.

02/24/2019

No update for lastnight, ended up being called in to work and 12hrs of OT is hard to turn down.

Little worn out,not sure if anything is getting done tonight.

Getting the new patch tack welded in place.

02/14/2019

So right out of the brake,I grabbed a square and found it was just shy of being 90 so it went back in press for just a slight more of a bend.

02/14/2019

Bent my first frame piece in the new press brake.

02/14/2019

Grrrr,one video at a time,it speaks for itself,well I speak for it buttttt 😎

02/13/2019

Decided I needed to finish the press brake so that when I repair the frame I can cut out an L section, bend a piece and weld in a single patch instead of two pieces like I did on the passenger side.

First test was with a piece of steel that I thought I remembered being a high strength steel,it was,it didn’t bend,it broke, made me jump lol.

Second test was perfect, just need to find some springs to put on the brake to make it “spring “ back up off the piece as I raise the jack, also will have to learn to bend and check not just give it hell, the bend is a little more than a 90 but over all this was a success.

So high performance cars(Mopar) got torque boxes, convertibles not only got them in the rear but upfront also to stiffen up the the body to try and make up for the missing structure called a roof.

Well the drivers side front must have got plugged up with crap causing any and all moisture to just sit in there, not only was most of the torque box rusted away but so is a section of frame shown here and another piece the torque box attached to in the front.

Working on a game plan right now on how to deal with this, looks like I will be making templates before cutting all the rust out.

No actual car updates but yesterday I bought a compressor because mine has been getting weak(bought it in 1996) and I found this badass Quincy for a good deal so out with the old and in with the slightly used.

Today I had to go buy shorter shelf horizontal pieces because the new compressor is an 80 gallon and much bigger than the old 60 gallon.

So while moving things around I was able to move my press,it’s a HF unit and wobbles a bit,I started doing a little welding on it to make it more sturdy and then had the bright idea to google mods for it,tomorrow after I get the Quincy inside I am going to start building a press brake for the press, wish I had known about it sooner,I would have used it for frame rail repair instead of making 90s by welding them.

This link shows how easy it is and just so happens I have a fair amount of the metal needed to do it.

Last picture for a while, notice the stubby piece of frame that heads toward the front of the car is back in,even welded 100%.

Next time the goal is to get all the little scraps of the floor out so that I can get the floor pan down in place and marked so that I can start drilling a hundred holes so that it can be plug welded in place.

Last night for updates for a bit, back to work tomorrow evening and with 12hr shifts it leaves time for eat, travel and sleep,so after tonight won’t be back in the garage for 8 nights.

The original frame section had little tabs on each side that add strength that I didn’t feel I could rebuild untill the frame was welded back in to get the curve right.

Welding, grinding and making some small tabs to weld to the frame tonight, nothing really picture worthy unless you want to see my new torch cart 🙂
Welded wheels on it a few nights back, painted it lastnight just before I left the garage and put the bottles in it tonight.
Holds four bottles, run one out just hook up another and keep going with little hassle, then run the empty down to be filled at my convenience.

Not sure I have told this story but I pulled this out of a pole barn where it sat for 8-10 years, front floors were full of raccoon poop but the owner before I am told lived in Plattsmouth Nebraska, when the top got really bad he just left it down and continued to drive it to work,he pulled the body plugs in the floor so that most of the water drained out but that’s the problem,I was told he drove it rain or shine with the top down!

That explains the floor rot and frame sections attached to it,hopefully in the next two months all of that will be repaired.

01/27/2019

First picture is from the night before, had started stitching welding in the patch where the frame rail contacts the inner rocker, second is a couple hours of grinding, welding and then grinding again.
Probably trying to make it look to nice, once the floor is in it will never be seen again.

So a buddy of mine who is a body man suggested some high temp paint in areas where I will be welding,so hit it with some header paint, when it comes time to weld I will grind just enough to weld, then coat that in weld through primer.

During the silence I saw something shiny and had to build my version of it,this was my take on the Harbor Freight cart that shows three different machines on it along with storage.
I used to have two carts, one had a tig on it the other had two migs, ended up picking up a plasma cutter around Xmas and needed a place to put it,so I built a new cart that holds everything including two filing cabinets for storage.

Not much of an update after all this time but now that the flu has passed and my welder is repaired after I burned it up in a moment of stupidity it is now time to get after it.
These seat supports have many extra holes in them for some reason,so I am filling them in with weld and grinding away.

Also working on an inner rocker patch where the frame goes, hope to post pictures of that finished tomorrow.

440source claims their Stealth head flows around 70cfm more than a stock iron head,so right out of the box close to what a full ported iron head will flow.
If you looked at the pictures of the intake side of the head you saw that they needed very little porting to match the gasket,if you look at this picture you see that the exhaust side needs even less port work to match the gasket, pretty impressive for $499 per head.

Intake side of the 440source Stealth head, didn’t take much to gasket match, much less than a factory iron head.

440source heads really could be run as cast and it looks like they would far exceed stock big block casting but a couple hours per head makes them even better.
First picture from the bottom towards the right shows the ridge that you see on the left ground away, this literally took minutes but the slightest bump with a carbide cutter like I was using could have been ugly.

Picture two is the bowl cleaned up with no ridges left and the casting roughness smoothed out.

Picture three shows how little they need to be cleaned up to match the gasket surface, much much less material needs to be removed compared to a stock iron head.
