We spent three rewarding days on the Appalachian Trail treating ash for emerald ash borer in GA and TN. Sadly, quite a few bigger ash were flattened by hurricane Helene.

Lots of hiking, stinging nettle, and poison ivy but a truly worthwhile project. We have been working on some of these sites for over ten years via the Appalachian Trail Conservancy.

Well folks, we’re pretty messed up. Office space had 5.5 feet of water, and equipment left there is certainly destroyed. Same for truck and chipper.

Jason and I will assess as the water recedes and come up with a plan moving forward.

This will be a major blow, and force some decisions.

Nice change of pace but physically challenging (excruciating) two days pruning heritage apples on the Appalachian Trail near Roan Mountain, TN.

I think large-scale hemlock preservation projects are one of the most rewarding things we do. I love this shot of Jason treating hemlocks in Fiery Gizzard, part of Grundy Forest State Natural Area, Tracy City TN. In this project we treated over 7,800 trees on 1,860 acres.

If you only make one cut- make it count! Removing the parallel codominant lead on this young ginkgo saved it from numerous structural defects and likely stem failure.

Structural pruning when trees are getting established is essential for the best possible development of the mature plant. The most significant impacts can often be done with simple hand tools in a matter of seconds. Sadly, these formative opportunities are rarely taken.

YES! And save your own ash as well.

YES! And save your own ash as well.

The emerald ash borer (EAB) – a small, metallic-green beetle from the Eurasian – is destroying Pisgah's ash tree populations. If we act now, we can save Pisgah's ash trees for future generations and our native habitat.
