See the Notes section for detailed lists of curated titles. Welcome to the US home of the Studio Ghibli Theatrical Poster Collection! The KKA curates and maintains collections of Japanese motion pictures (both live-action and animated) and related ephemera for use during screenings and showings for various civic and educational groups. The collections are available for academic research. Paul Mayer (Kawasumi), a.k.a. "Eishagishi" ('projectionist' in Japanese), is the collections' founder and volunteer curator. The archive was named in honor of Paul's grandparents, Florence (Miyoshi) and George (Toramatsu) Kawasumi. Paul also assists with volunteer content editing and upkeep at the GhibliWiki - http://www.nausicaa.net/wiki/Main_Page , a site by and for fans of the highly regarded Japanese animation house, Studio Ghibli. The archives were started in 1999 in Long Beach, CA, then moved to Las Vegas, NV in 2001. In July 2013 the archives were relocated to Albuquerque, NM, and in March 2014 custody for the archives was temporarily turned over to UNM's Anime Club. UNM senior and past anime club president Justin D. Brough joined KKA at that time and assumed the role of curator. In 2017 custody for the archives reverted back to Paul where he continues to work on the archives as personal finances allow.

George Lucas & Akira Kurosawa on set during the filming of THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK | During the initial castings for his space-opera, George Lucas offered the part of Obi-Wan Kenobi to Toshiro Mifune who turned it down for fear that it would likely "cheapen the image of samurai." While there were subsequent discussions around Mifune taking on the role of Vader instead, Mifune opted to turn down that role as well.

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures recently announced details of “Hayao Miyazaki,” its inaugural temporary exhibition.

The exhibition is curated by Academy Museum Exhibitions Curator Jessica Niebel and Assistant Curator J. Raúl Guzmán and organized in collaboration with Japan’s renowned Studio Ghibli, which Miyazaki co-founded in 1985.

On view in the museum’s Marilyn and Jeffrey Katzenberg Gallery and unveiled for the first time when the museum opens to the public on April 30, 2021, “Hayao Miyazaki” marks the first North American museum retrospective dedicated to the acclaimed artist and his work.

With more than 300 objects, the exhibition will explore each of Miyazaki’s animated feature films, including “My Neighbor Totoro” (1988) and the Academy Award-winning “Spirited Away” (2001). Visitors will travel through the filmmaker’s six-decade career through a dynamic presentation of original imageboards, character designs, storyboards, layouts, backgrounds, posters, and cels, including pieces on public view outside of Japan for the first time, as well as large-scale projections of film clips and immersive environments.
