Hello Globalistas and Film Lovers!

Tomorrow, Thursday September 8, the 3rd ¡Globalquerque! International Cinema Series continues with the film The Owl and The Sparrow at 7 PM in the Bank of America Theatre at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. FREE!

The Owl and The Sparrow follows a young girl who refusing to surrender her optimism despite difficult circumstances brings two unlikely strangers together in this comedy drama from Vietnam. Thuy is an orphan who, after the death of her parents, has been sent to live with her uncle Tran Le Minh. Tran runs a company that processes bamboo, and he puts Thuy to work in his factory, where's she puts in long hours and is treated poorly by her uncle and his associates. Convinced life has better things to offer, Thuy runs away to Saigon, and she soon makes friends with a handful of plucky fellow orphans who survive on the street and look out for one another. Thuy supports herself by selling flowers, and during her rounds she meets Hai, a friendly zookeeper who is looking after a baby elephant that is soon to be sold. Thuy and her friends meet every day at a diner where a boy serves the kids soup; another regular at the restaurant is Lan, a stewardess who takes a liking to Thuy and lets the girl stay with her when she's in town on layover. Thuy senses that Lan is lonely, much like Hai, and she decides that with a little intervention on her part, Hai and Lan might make a good couple and she could become their adopted daughter. However, Thuy soon learns that matchmaking is a more challenging task than she realized.

Los Angeles Film Festival Audience Award Winner

“[Director] Stephane Gauger... brings a tonic freshness to his simple, even simple-minded tale of a plucky orphan, Thuy (Pham Thi Han), playing cupid in Ho Chi Minh City, formerly Saigon.” —New York Times

“What [director] Gauger has created is a quietly affecting fairy tale.” —Los Angeles Times

“Stephane Gauger's keenly observed debut feature, The Owl and The Sparrow, takes vérité-style filmmaking to the streets of Saigon. With a captivating central performance by 10-year-old newcomer Pham Thi Han and an empathetic storyline depicting the ordeals of urban alienation, The Owl and The Sparrow should nest comfortably on a strategically positioned specialty theatrical slate.” —Film Journal International

“Sentimental without being cloying, the film is a charmer, just like the gravely wide-eyed Pham.” —Time Out

Hello Globalistas and Film Lovers!

Tonight, the 3rd ¡Globalquerque! International Cinema Series opens with the fantastic, mind-bending, powerful and thoughtful, film Embrace of The Serpent / El Abrazo de la Serpiente at 7 PM in the Bank of America Theatre at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. FREE!

At once blistering and poetic, the ravages of colonialism cast a dark shadow over the South American landscape in "Embrace of the Serpent," the third feature by Ciro Guerra. Filmed in stunning black-and-white, “Serpent” centers on Karamakate, an Amazonian shaman and the last survivor of his people, and the two scientists who, over the course of 40 years, build a friendship with him. The film was inspired by the real-life journals of two explorers (Theodor Koch-Grünberg and Richard Evans Schultes) who traveled through the Colombian Amazon during the last century in search of the sacred and difficult-to-find psychedelic Yakruna plant.

2016 Oscar Nominee: Best Foreign Language Film
2015 Cannes Film Festival Art Cinema Award

"'Embrace of the Serpent' is the type of film we're always searching for, yet seems so obvious once we've found it.” ***** —Guardian (UK)

"Creating this kind of otherworldly mood takes exceptional talent, and this is a film worth experiencing.” —San Francisco Chronicle

"Like Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness (and the movie it inspired, 'Apocalypse Now'), the drama examines the idea of progress and what it means to be civilized.” —Washington Post

This is what The Guardian said in their 5-Star review of Embrace of the Serpent:
"Ciro Guerra’s gorgeous picture just has that ripped-from-your-dreams sensibility, where surprising turns float alongside a story you feel like you’ve known your whole life. Embrace of the Serpent is the type of film we’re always searching for, yet seems so obvious once we’ve found it."

Hi, will you please share this info? :)
The Guild Theatre is showing Life and Nothing More tomorrow and I couldn't be more pleased. I've been hearing great things about this film and I so excited to have an opportunity to see it. I first saw it in the New York Times https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/23/movies/life-and-nothing-more-review.html. If you're interested you can see more on the theatre's website http://www.guildcinema.com/movie/2333
If you're looking for western recommendations, I found the trailer for this film called Five Fingers for Marseilles that looks great. It's about a young man who returns to his hometown only to find it overrun with crime. The cinematography looks incredible, even the trailer is gorgeous. Vuyo Dybala also looks great as the lead. If you want to check it out, I linked the trailer I saw down below, and here's a link where you can pre order it: https://apple.co/2OxdAfJ
RIDE IN STYLE. I PROVIDE COMFORT IN KNOWING YOU ARE WELL TAKEN CARE OF. DEPENDABLE, PERSONABLE. RELIABLE. XM RADIO, AUX CORD AND PHONE CHARGERS. Candy, mints and laughter also available. Hello everyone, I am going to offer you all my ride services to and from sets. I drive a 2009 Cadillac CTS which is mechanically in excellent condition. New tires. I have NEVER had a driving offense in my life other than one speeding ticket which was dismissed. (10mph over) I have room to fit three comfortably and four (One in passenger seat and three in back) which could be a tight fit in back depending on the size of the passengers. I have room in the trunk for one bag each per rider. For rides within the Albuquerque city limits I will charge each rider $1.50 per mile . (That will be calculated for each passenger from your pickup point to the drop off point. If I have to pick you each up at a different location you will each be charged individually) For sets outside the Albuquerque area I will only drive a minimum of three passengers for which I will charge $1.00 per mile each way which can be divided between all the riders. (e.g. Three or four riders from Abq to Estancia to "Old Story" base camp. Google says it's 50 miles each way. That would equal $50 each way. If you need the ride only one way I will add an additional $15 if you are not paying for the full round trip. Divide those costs between either three or four riders and you have the total cost per person for my services. e.g. You book me for a round trip which totals 100 miles. That would cost you $100 dollars divided among four passengers. Your individual cost per passenger for the round trip of 100 miles is $25 each.) These are only out of town rates. It may seem a bit pricey but this is a ride service I am providing and I have many expenses. I also provide these services outside of this forum as an alternative to Uber/Lyft. Pricing dependent on trip distance. Hope to serve you all. I also offer these services to all involved on film sets (e.p. Set crew, PA's, actors, producers, directors etc ...) Other services and rates available for airport pickups of executives and staff. William Hawley Safe Ride Services (505) 453-2601
