Last of the Summer Vine

I’ve always loved drawing old buildings, both in England and abroad. The more ornate the better. I just love the wisteria I spotted on Cinquecento 500 the other week. Just recently I’ve bought some shiny new virtual brushes for my Procreate app and have been playing around with some great textures. And perspective.

If you want me to draw your building or just want to see more of things I’ve drawn, head over to my website.

Finding My Style

These five drawings picturing my daughter drawing, span 14 years. During this time, we both have grown and developed. She’s graduated with a first in animation from LCC (Proud! moge ) and while I have not received such a prestigious accolade, I’d like to think I have honed my style.

These illustrations are about capturing elements. The sparkles in the water, and the glasses. How to make hair, hairy and more recently concentrating on texture, like the wood and the woolly jumper of the Covent Garden café.

Which one floats your boat? Let me know.

Snow Leopards of Nepal - (Acutally the snow leopards came via Marwell Zoo as I’ve not actually been to Nepal ever). I’m trying out a more painterly approach using ProCreate rather than my usual go-to ‘Paper’ app. While I’m not ready to completely ditch my tried and trusted app that I’ve been using for the past 14 years, I will admit ProCreate does have a plethora of interestingly named brushes and I spent some pleasant hours making the wood, knotty (Scratchy Strands brush), the rocks, rocky (Motorsport and Pepperberry) and of course the fur, furry (Campagnia and Wintercress).

LOVE Cafe Delmar Kalkan Kalkan ! It’s right at the bottom of Hasan Altan Cad heading towards the sea. An excellent spot to escape from the heat of the day or to people-watch and sip an after dinner cocktail. Plump up your cat-shaped cushion, sit on a gilded couch and feast on baklava, decaf cappuccino and a bit of free internet. The cafe is packed to the rafters with Turkish pots, quirky ephemera, whirling dervishes, shells and dream catchers, and a colourful rag canopy which connects the existing old-town house to the adjoining Culture House Kalkan Kültür Evi CultureHouse also one I drew earlier.

As a premises it’s rather hard to draw all in one, and for a while we thought it we were sitting in ‘The Leaves’ as there is a huge green sign of the same name, which I think belongs to their sister restaurant above? If you look carefully amongst the festoons of bougainvillea, you can a see a small Cafe Del Mar sign, but if it was up to me I’d go a bit bigger on the branding. See my suggestion above 😉 Regardless, now you know where it is, follow the bougainvillea for a very chilled vibe. I like drawing buildings, if you need a picture of your business or villa (or dog, cat or daughter ) I’m open for commissions. instead

It was back to my London College of Printing roots for this one. I spent a happy afternoon with Deli Tev’s owner getting hands-on with printing ink and wooden blocks at a wonderful little print shop Sea Sky Gallery & Design in Hamble. I wanted to create that nostalgic feeling of the 70’s pantry with its sets of Scandinavian cermaic herb jars, TG Green tea caddies, and random bohemian pots from long forgotten package holidays. Look out for a Deli Tev in a South London high street sometime soon. instead.

‘Alternately: Odysseus stays at home and waits for his sourdough to prove’. Real life mimics art sometimes, hubby relaxes after reading about waiting for his dough to rise. So what section of my portfolio does ‘The Odyssey’ go under? ‘TRAVEL’ or “PEOPLE’? Do take a look and report back. Link in bio. By the way the bread was epic! illustrates.

Minaartcafe Minaartcafe the best Persian dining in town!!

I drew the sketch on my iPad from a series of photos, trying to capture the creativity and essence of the couple who run this cafe, shop and intimate Persian bistro, and include some of their art and cat. It took about eight hours. In this day and age you might say ‘use AI’ and get a result in as many seconds. But I’d argue true handcrafted art is like preparing a banquet and for something delicious and memorable you need time, dedication, life-experience and soul and perhaps just a sprinkling of talent ;-)

Who should I draw next time I’m back in town?

I specialise in drawing travel illustrations, people, maps, animals, and buildings. If you’d like to see more, just have a chat or commission me, please message me

I met this lovely lady Tuba Gençer and her dog Paco for tea at her hotel True Blue in Kalamar, the other day. True Blue Boutique Hotel looks like a really classy, welcoming boutique hotel with a bit of a bohemian going on. Rather like its owner ;-) I’m meeting and drawing lots of lovely people at the moment. Maybe I need to start the hashtag

PurinaUKI ‘Nourishing Pets. Enriching Lives’ is your website brand statement. Yet this AI slop you are perpetuating is about as nourishing as a pile of squidgy pink MRM. In what weird brand strategy meeting was that thought of as a clever idea? Not only have you really done nothing for your own brand you certainly aren’t enriching any illustrator’s lives out there. How about picking some hand crafted artisanal pets for your next campaign? 🐈‍⬛ My cats go GGGRRRR!

It’s day! The Thursday market is definitely aimed more at tourists than it was. Cheap fake bags and t shirts replacing the gaudy table cloths and washing up bowls of old. But the veg sellers and the gözleme ladies are still there for a fab lunch and the sense of humour and warm welcome remain the same.
