🎬 ภาพยนตร์สนทนา: เมื่อฝรั่งถ่ายหนังรัชกาลที่ 5 เรื่องเล่าที่ยังไม่จบ?

เมื่อครั้งที่พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชกาลที่ 5 เสด็จพระราชดำเนินประพาสยุโรปเป็นครั้งแรก ในปี 2440 เป็นช่วงเวลาเดียวกับที่ภาพยนตร์เพิ่งถือกำเนิดขึ้นได้เพียงปีเศษ การเสด็จประพาสต่างทวีปยาวนานกว่า 7 เดือนในครั้งนั้น จึงไม่เพียงแต่จะเป็นเหตุการณ์สำคัญในหน้าประวัติศาสตร์ไทย หากยังนับเป็นจุดเริ่มต้นของประวัติศาสตร์ภาพยนตร์ที่เกี่ยวข้องกับคนไทย และประวัติศาสตร์การอนุรักษ์ภาพยนตร์ในเมืองไทยไปพร้อมกัน
เริ่มต้นจากวันที่ 25 พฤษภาคม 2440 ที่กรุงเบิร์น ประเทศสวิตเซอร์แลนด์ ฟรองซัวส์-อองรี ลาว็องชี-คลาร์ก ช่างถ่ายหนังชาวสวิส ผู้เป็นตัวแทนของซีเนมาโตกราฟ ประดิษฐกรรมภาพยนตร์ของพี่น้องลูมิแอร์แห่งฝรั่งเศส ได้ถ่ายภาพยนตร์บันทึกภาพขณะขบวนรถม้าพระที่นั่งของรัชกาลที่ 5 กำลังเสด็จจากสถานีรถไฟไปยังโรงแรมเบิร์นเนอร์ฮอฟที่ประทับ ภาพยนตร์นี้ปรากฏอยู่ในบัญชีซีเนมาโตกราฟของบริษัทลูมิแอร์ หมายเลข 786 ชื่อ Berne : Arrivée du roi de Siam หรือ พระเจ้ากรุงสยามเสด็จฯ ถึงกรุงเบิร์น นับเป็นภาพยนตร์ม้วนแรกสุดที่ถ่ายเกี่ยวกับคนไทย
ต่อมา วันที่ 13 กรกฎาคม 2440 เออร์เนสต์ ฟลอร์แมน ช่างถ่ายหนังคนแรกของสวีเดน ได้ถ่ายหนังการรับเสด็จรัชกาลที่ 5 ณ ท่าเรือลอการ์ด หน้าพระราชวังหลวง กรุงสตอล์กโฮม ประเทศสวีเดน เมื่อวันที่ 13 กรกฎาคม 2440 ซึ่งพระองค์ได้มีพระราชหัตถเลขาถึงเหตุการณ์ดังกล่าวว่า “...มาถึงท่าโดดขึ้นมารับที่ท่าอีกครั้ง 1 มีหนังฝรั่งมันถ่ายรูปไว้ดีมาก…”
ในช่วงที่กำลังรณรงค์ให้เกิดการก่อตั้งหน่วยงานอนุรักษ์ภาพยนตร์ในประเทศไทย โดม สุขวงศ์ หนึ่งในคณะทำงานรณรงค์ฯ ได้ค้นพบข้อมูลของภาพยนตร์ดังกล่าว และดำเนินการประสานงานกับต่างประเทศ จนทำให้เกิดการมอบฟิล์มภาพยนตร์ทั้งสองม้วนให้แก่ประเทศไทยในช่วงต้นปี 2527 เป็นแรงขับเคลื่อนสำคัญให้สังคมไทยตระหนักถึงความจำเป็นของการอนุรักษ์ภาพยนตร์อย่างจริงจัง และสามารถจัดตั้งหอภาพยนตร์แห่งชาติได้สำเร็จอย่างเป็นทางการในวันที่ 7 กันยายนปีนั้น
อย่างไรก็ตาม แม้เวลาจะผ่านมานานกว่าศตวรรษ เหตุการณ์ประวัติศาสตร์นี้ยังคงมีสิ่งใหม่ ๆ ให้เสาะหาและค้นพบ โดยในปี 2568 หอภาพยนตร์ได้พบว่าครอบครัวของ ฟรองซัวส์-อองรี ลาว็องชี-คลาร์ก ได้เก็บรักษาหีบถมทองขนาดเล็กที่รัชกาลที่ 5 พระราชทานแก่ ลาว็องชี-คลาร์ก หลังจากที่เขาฉายภาพยนตร์ พระเจ้ากรุงสยามเสด็จฯ ถึงกรุงเบิร์น ให้ทอดพระเนตร เมื่อวันที่ 30 พฤษภาคม 2440 และผู้ดูแลหีบใบนี้ได้ตัดสินใจมอบให้หอภาพยนตร์อนุรักษ์ไว้ เมื่อต้นปี 2569 ผ่านการประสานงานจาก ฮันส์มาร์ติน ซีเกอริสต์ นักประวัติศาสตร์ภาพยนตร์ผู้ค้นคว้าเรื่องลาว็องชี-คลาร์ก
นอกจากนี้ ในภาพยนตร์สารคดีปี 2565 เรื่อง Lichtspieler - Wie Lavanchy-Clarke die Schweiz ins Kino holte ที่ฮันส์มาร์ตินกำกับ ยังได้กล่าวถึงในภาพยนตร์ของ ลาว็องชี-คลาร์ก อีกประมาณ 40 เรื่อง ที่ไม่เคยเป็นที่รู้จักมาก่อน ซึ่งรวมถึงภาพยนตร์บันทึกภาพเหตุการณ์รัชกาลที่ 5 เสด็จถึงกรุงเบิร์น ที่พบเพิ่มอีก 2 ม้วน
✨ วันเสาร์ที่ 30 พฤษภาคม 2569 เนื่องในวาระครบรอบเหตุการณ์ที่ ลาว็องชี-คลาร์ก ฉายภาพยนตร์ พระเจ้ากรุงสยามเสด็จฯ ถึงกรุงเบิร์น ให้รัชกาลที่ 5 ได้ทอดพระเนตร และเป็นวันที่พระองค์พระราชทานหีบถมทองแก่เขา ซึ่งปัจจุบันได้กลับคืนสู่ประเทศไทย หอภาพยนตร์จึงได้จัดกิจกรรมภาพยนตร์สนทนา “เมื่อฝรั่งถ่ายหนังรัชกาลที่ 5 เรื่องเล่าที่ยังไม่จบ?” โดยจะจัดฉายหนังการเสด็จประพาสยุโรปทั้ง 2 เรื่อง และสารคดี Lichtspieler - Wie Lavanchy-Clarke die Schweiz ins Kino holte พร้อมทั้งเชิญผู้กำกับ Hansmartin Siegrist และโปรดิวเซอร์ Andreas Weber มาร่วมสนทนาทางออนไลน์

When Foreigners Filmed King Rama V: An Unfinished Story?

Cinema had been born just over a year before King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) made his first visit to Europe in 1897. The king’s seven-month journey through the continent was not only a significant moment in Thai history, but also marked the beginning of film history related to Thailand — and the history of film preservation in our country.
On 25 May 1897, in Bern, Switzerland, François-Henri Lavanchy-Clarke, a Swiss filmmaker and representative of the Lumière brothers’ Cinématographe, filmed the royal carriage procession of King Rama V travelling from the railway station to the Bernerhof Hotel. The film appeared in the Lumière company catalogue as No. 786, Berne : Arrivée du roi de Siam (The King of Siam Arriving in Bern), and is considered the first film with a Thai person in it.
Later, on 13 July 1897, Ernest Florman, Sweden’s first filmmaker, recorded the royal reception of King Rama V at Logård Pier in front of the Royal Palace in Stockholm. In a royal letter describing the occasion, the King wrote: “...When arriving at the pier, another reception was held there. A foreign moving picture camera captured it very well…”
Those two films held such historical significance, and when Dome Sukvong was campaigning to establish Thailand’s national film archive, he coordinated with overseas institutions to acquire copies of them. Both films were returned to Thailand in early 1984. Our first evidence of moving history became a catalyst in raising public awareness of the need for film preservation and ultimately led to the official establishment of the National Film Archive on 7 September that same year.
Even after more than a century, this historical episode continues to reveal new discoveries. In 2025, the Thai Film Archive learned that the family of François-Henri Lavanchy-Clarke had preserved a small gold-lacquered royal presentation box given to him by King Rama V after the King attended a screening of The King of Siam Arriving in Bern on 30 May 1897. Through the coordination of film historian Hansmartin Siegrist, who has extensively researched Lavanchy-Clarke, the current custodian of the box decided to donate it to the Thai Film Archive in early 2026.
In addition, the 2022 documentary Lichtspieler – Wie Lavanchy-Clarke die Schweiz ins Kino holte, directed by Hansmartin Siegrist, mentions around 50 previously unknown films by Lavanchy-Clarke, including two additional reels documenting King Rama V’s arrival in Bern.
On Saturday, 30 May 2026, marking the anniversary of the screening of The King of Siam Arriving in Bern for King Rama V and the occasion on which the royal presentation box was given to Lavanchy-Clarke, the Thai Film Archive will present the film talk event When Foreigners Filmed King Rama V: An Unfinished Story? The gold-lacquered box has also returned to Thailand, a majestic piece of history now added to the preservation collection of the Thai Film Archive.
✨ The programme will feature screenings of the two films documenting the royal European tour, as well as the documentary Lichtspieler – Wie Lavanchy-Clarke die Schweiz ins Kino holte. Director Hansmartin Siegrist and Producer Andreas Weber will also join the event for an online discussion.
Screenings begin at 1:00 p.m. at Sala Cinema, Thai Film Archive. Admission is free of charge.
