We recently replaced an old irreparable heatpump.
The following is a rundown of how Electrical Solutions carried out the job.
Rather than sitting the new outdoor unit on pavers, as most outdoor units are installed, we installed cantilevered brackets to support the unit. The new outdoor unit sits level and has good space around it for good airflow. This helps reduce future operating issues and premature component failure.
Given the existing interconnecting pipes were not compatible with the new unit, new pipes were installed. Old pipes can also contaminate the new heatpump resulting in problems later on.
The exterior pipework trunking was painted the same colour as the existing roof, spouting, downpipes and pergola.
The existing indoor unit condensate drain discharged directly under the house. This results in water pooling under the house. The discharging of water under a house is in breech of the building code, however it is extremely common to see heatpump condensate drains installed this way. We installed a new drain under the floor, discharging out through the foundation grate into a waste water gully trap.
Once disconnected, the old outdoor unit is left holding the old refrigerant. In order to dispose of the old outdoor unit, the refrigerant must be removed. The refrigerant is a greenhouse gas and contributes to climate change, therefore needs to be removed and disposed of accordingly. When removing old outdoor units, a large number of installers will discharge the refrigerant directly into the atmosphere. Not only is this practice bad for the environment it has been illegal to do so since 1 January 2013. This can incur a fine up to $50,000.
Rather than discharge the refrigerant into the atmosphere, the refrigerant was recovered using specific equipment then disposed of in a legal and environmentally responsible manner.
The old unit was disassembled so the different components could be recycled. The old inteconnecting pipes were also recycled.
Environmental impact is important to us at Electrical Solutions. Our supplied products and installation methods have been considered and chosen in order to help reduce our environmental impact as best as we can.
