In 2021, Argentinian farmer Juan de Dios Sota made a surprising discovery while tending his field near Rincón de Valle: four massive armored shells of Glyptodontes, buried for over 10,000 years. These prehistoric creatures, similar to giant traps, roamed the Earth during the last Ice Age (the Pleistocene age). The rare finding of multiple armored shells together suggests this site may have been an important meeting place for these ancient giants. The final resting place of the Glyptodontons was probably the result of a sudden and catastrophic event (perhaps rapid climate change, severe flooding or sedimental trapping (mud burial) that buried them under layers of sediment. The exceptional state of conservation of these armored shells indicates that they were quickly covered, which protected them from erosion and decomposition. This extraordinary discovery not only reveals new knowledge about the lives of these enormous creatures, but also offers powerful insight into the ancient world they inhabited, shaped by the very relentless forces of nature.
