*AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER Season 2 has officially landed on Netflix*, continuing Aang’s adventure as he enters the Earth Kingdom. The live-action series returns with larger-scale fights, tougher challenges, and the highly anticipated arrival of Toph.

Lee Pace is officially set to return as Thranduil one final time in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, which is scheduled to arrive in theaters in December 2027.

For fans of The Hobbit trilogy, the news is especially emotional. More than a decade after first bringing the Elvenking of Mirkwood to life, Pace will once again step into the crown, armor, and robes of one of Middle-earth’s most memorable Elves.

Reacting to the announcement, Pace shared his excitement with fans, writing:

“What a gift to return to Middle Earth, this character, these extraordinarily creative people…. See you in Mirkwood!”

In a separate interview, he spoke about how much it means when fans tell him that The Hobbit helped them through difficult periods of their lives, saying:

“The more you think what a privilege it is to be able to bring enjoyment and entertainment to people.”

Pace also reflected on playing fantasy characters, explaining that he never treats them as fundamentally different from ordinary people:

“There have been times I’ve done not-genre things where I find those characters as surreal, if not more… I mean, life is more surreal than genre.”

His return was quietly teased months earlier when Philippa Boyens revealed she had an exciting “lunch with an Elven lord” while discussing the upcoming film.

As a lifelong Tolkien fan who first read The Hobbit as a child, returning to Mirkwood is a true full-circle moment for Lee Pace. And for many fans, knowing that Thranduil will ride into Middle-earth one last time makes The Hunt for Gollum even more special.
