The InviSible

The InviSible The InviSible is a campaign that promotes awareness about intersex at HKU.We will be launching a 2-day booth event with a lot of fun and games soon!

In Hong Kong society, there are more and more people calling for LGBT rights yet missing out the “I” for intersex. Intersex people are often confronted by discrimination and personal growth problems both physically and psychologically. Some issues such as forced sexual reassignment surgery and personal identity crisis may arise in the intersex community. However, due to the lack of public awarenes

s, these issues remain hidden under the spotlight. Therefore, we want to take an initiative in learning about them bring them up to the public. Our research will look into the social stigmas intersex people are facing and whether the information appears on mass media or movies convey the actual situation. We will also conduct a survey on the attitude of HKU students towards intersex people and investigate on how much they know about intersex, whether they accept gender diversity, and if they love someone for who they are or care more about their gender and appearance. We also wish to conduct an interview with an intersex people to obtain first-hand information. Moreover, we plan to set up a booth at HKU aiming to raise public awareness on intersex issues and to educate people to embrace differences in sexuality as well as promoting against corrective surgery. We will design leaflets based on our research findings and distribute them in the booth. Short videos about real life experiences of an intersex will be displayed by iPad and laptop. There will also be mini-quizzes related to intersex issues provided to the students. Lastly, we will make a large sign-up board and ask people to sign their names and care more about intersex issues. We firmly believe that sex should be a continuum instead of two distinct categories, and diversities within the continuum should be accepted and embraced. Therefore we think the corrective surgery is not necessary at all because intersexual people should have the rights to live as who they truly are and we want to educate the public about this. We hope that people can see intersex as a variation instead of a disease.

TODAY is: Inters*x Solidarity Day 8th November - Herculine Barbin’s Birthday

Herculine Adélaîde Barbin was designated female at birth in rural France, 1838. She was raised and regarded as a girl and her family called her Alexina. She grew up poor, pious and studied in a convent. At age 17, she seemed to miss puberty, did not menstruate, remained flat chested, and would trim the hairs on her upper lip and cheeks. After a year of training, she became an assistant teacher in a girl's school, fell in love with another female teacher, and they became lovers.

DECLARATION OF THE FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES OF
THE ORGANISATION INTERSEX INTERNATIONAL

1) Inters*x is not a disorder of s*x development: inters*x refers to those individuals born of intermediate s*x - between what is considered standard for male or female in our societies.

2) Contrary to what is often asserted, the various degrees of inters*x are not innately an illness or deformity. They are simply variations of the human body similar to the length of the nose, the colour of eyes, etc.

3) We reject medical categories for the various degrees of inters*x, which are in fact only different reference points on a natural continuum of anatomical and genetic variations.

4) We stress the whole person from infancy through adulthood and choose not to focus on an individual's ge***alia. We are people, not ge***als. As people, we have a right to our own ge***alia and our own identity without interference, forced treatment or other coercion from legal and/or medical authorities.

Do you know...
Inters*x Day of Remembrance, also known as Inters*x Solidarity Day is an internationally observed civil awareness day designed to highlight issues faced by inters*x people. It marks the birthday of Herculine Barbin, a French inters*x person whose memoirs were later published by Michel Foucault in Herculine Barbin: Being the Recently Discovered Memoirs of a Nineteenth-century French Hermaphrodite.

Between October 26 and November 8, inters*x organizations try to bring attention to the challenges inters*x individuals face, culminating in the Inters*x Day of Remembrance on the birthday of Herculine Barbin, also sometimes known as Inters*x Solidarity Day.

Alice Dreger works with people at the edge of anatomy, such as conjoined twins and inters*xed people. In her observation, it's often a fuzzy line between male and female, among other anatomical distinctions. Which brings up a huge question: Why do we let our anatomy determine our fate?
