A 2026 SXSW panel stated the festival-to-streaming model is effectively dead for 99 percent of filmmakers. Even highly acclaimed festival films increasingly walk away with no traditional distribution deal in place.
The old path, where a distributor acquires a film at a festival and releases it, now reaches a tiny fraction of titles. Instead of waiting on legacy studios or tech platforms to open the gates, independent filmmakers are taking control and actively building their own direct-to-audience distribution pipelines.
