Last Call for Mr. Paul

Week 5 Day 5 - Last Call for Mr Paul! It’s Friday, and that means that as we reveal our final film, this week’s watchlist is complete.

Ever been late for a flight? Jason Paul uses his jaw-dropping freerunning skills to get through security at the Munich airport to catch his flight in record time. Somersaults off trollies, flips over escalators and daring jumps from the gangway – to catch a flight that had already been deemed missed, Jason Paul tries everything in his power. “As soon as I hear ‘Last Call for Mr Paul’ I imagine being stuck in a video game,” says Jason. “It’s my personal version of Mission Impossible.” In doing so and inspired by Jackie Chan the German freerunning ace almost always seems to reach the next level – almost always…

The Trail To Kazbegi

Week 5 Day 4 - Today’s film is The Trail To Kazbegi, which screened as part of Bikepacking and Mountain Bike films at ShAFF 2017.

What happens when four like-minded adventurers head into one of the world’s wildest mountain ranges with nothing but their mountain bikes and enough food to survive for 10 days? The answer? What doesn’t happen? Terrifying lightning storms. Raging-river crossings. Snow-covered glacial pass traverses. Mind-melting descents. Constant fights with vicious dogs. Tense encounters with over-zealous border-patrol guards. All of the above were just another day following “The Trail to Kazbegi,” a self-supported mountain-bike mission through the highest reaches of the Caucasus Mountains in the former Soviet Republic of Georgia. In the process, they cemented lasting friendships and proved, yet again, that life is simply better in the mountains.

Beulah

Week 5 Day 3 - Beulah! A bikepacking journey to discover the wild very north-west tip of Scotland. Expect loaded bikes, empty roads & wilderness, campfires, bothies, tents and a steady flow of single malt.

Beulah follows a @panniercc cycle tour to explore the Cape Wrath track; a journey inspired by a 1970s OS Map Sheet of the most north-westerly part of Scotland found in a Hay-on-Wye bookshop. Stefan, Will, Jordan and Luke set off from London on the sleeper train one evening to ride a three day circular route at the golden touring pace of 10mph; turns out they probably dropped to an even lower average.

More than discuss the details of this trip in particular, Pannier and Brother Cycles wanted to celebrate the general idea of heading off on bike adventures. The eight-minute short was filmed totally unsupported (Luke, the filmmaker, carried all the kit on his bike) and they wanted to make it this way for two reasons: to provide an authentic account of what it was like to be on a Pannier adventure cycling trip, and to test it out and see if it was possible…

Mirror Wall (2016)

Week 5 Day 2 - Today’s film is Mirror Wall. Made by local filmmakers @coldhouseuk this big wall adventure film challenges the tallest known face on the east coast of Greenland, while providing moments for reflection 1200m off the ground.

The need for adventure and a changing horizon is a natural instinct for many people. In the case of renowned adventurer Leo Houlding, this has manifested itself in the form of completing world class expeditions with tight-knit teams to unclimbed peaks around the world. Following the death of his long term climbing partner Sean ‘Stanley’ Leary and birth of his daughter Freya - ‘Mirror Wall’ finds Leo approaching his latest expedition with a reconsidered mentality and a completely new team.

Locked In

Another week begins and amid all the uncertainty, one thing is for sure - we will be posting adventure films chosen especially for you every night at 7pm. Watch them one by one, or save them up and screen your own virtual ShAFF session at home.

Week 5 Day 1 - The first film of the week is Locked In, a Red Bull film about the jaw dropping first descent of the Beriman Gorge.

Located just a few degrees off the equator, the island of New Britain, Papua New Guinea is a tapestry of virgin rainforest, unique culture and expansive coastline. Pouring out of the Nakani Mountains on the east side of the island is the Beriman River. Stretching over 40 kilometers from source to sea, the Beriman drops over 2000 meters to the Solomon Sea. It’s a deep, dark crack in the Earth that has remained a mystery until now. Ben Stookesberry, Chris Korbulic, Ben Marr and Pedro Oliva attempt the first descent of the Beriman River, pushing their skills and patience to the edge. 12 distinct gorges full of rapids, inescapable vertical walls, rising water levels and dense, virgin jungle stand in the way of them being able to achieve a first descent. The only way out is down.

STALKING CHERNOBYL: exploration after apocalypse (Trailer)

"A vivid and compelling film... where a dose of adrenaline matters more than a dose of radiation,"Beyond Nuclear International.

Due to be screened at ShAFF 2020, 'Stalking Chernobyl: Exploration After Apocalypse' is a fascinating documentary from Cultures of Resistance Films that offers a unique portal into the clandestine culture that has developed around the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone three decades after the world's worst nuclear disaster.

In addition to the explosion of officially-sanctioned tours to what has become Ukraine's top tourist destination, illegal hiking adventurers and urban explorers known as "stalkers," along with extreme sports enthusiasts, disaster tourists, artists, and underground tour operators, enter "The Zone". Many defy state prohibitions to dodge checkpoints and security guards in order to explore the mysterious and ghostly post-apocalyptic landscape.

Tomorrow there will be a special online Q&A with scientists, activists, and Chernobyl stalkers. The live event is free but due to limited space, please register via Zoom here: https://zoom.us/meeting/register/upwod-ivpzgiitbmxnYJFwVpvif0jNPtzg

Step Together! Yugen Explore were due to join us as an exhibitor for the first time at ShAFF 2020. As well as watching the film sessions, they had planned walking meet-ups and were looking forward to bringing everyone together at ShAFF.

Since that can't happen now, founder Grace says "I wanted a challenge to help motivate the outdoor community to exercise and feel part of something. At the same time I wanted to help the charities Mind and Alpkit Foundation that are doing amazing work day in day out and are especially needed during this crazy time."

The #step2gether challenge involves 2 hours of stepping Saturday 2nd May from 11:00-13:00. Anyone and everyone is invited to join, the more the merrier! komoot will be offering free map downloads using their app to plan routes from your doorstep and use your daily allowance to go for a local walk. The rest of the time can be spent walking round your garden, house or up and down the stairs. The idea is that we get everyone stepping together for 2 hours as if we were all walking together on a hiking meet-up. Take, breaks, go to the toilet or sit and drink your flask of tea like you would if you were up a mountain, but just keep stepping as much as you can for the 2 hours. Go at your own pace, it’s the taking part that counts! All we ask is that you support 1 or both of the charities Mind and Alpkit Foundation with a minimum donation of £5 or whatever you can afford!

Kroger's Canteen - Salomon Running TV S4 E06

Week 4 Day 3 - Today we present Kroger’s Canteen, a short story about an aid station and the people that make it happen, which featured in Run Films at ShAFF 2016.

In 2014, Kilian Jornet won the Hard Rock 100 mile run through the San Juan’s of Colorado. Along the way he stopped at Kroger’s Canteen – an aid station perched on a tiny ledge, 13,100ft above sea level. This is a story about that aid station, about the people that make it happen, and about the spirit one can only find at the Hard Rock 100.
