Happy First Photo Friday folks!

šŸ“· The summer holidays have begun!
I’m on a mission this summer…

šŸ“· To balance work and fun with my little ones.
I’ve got myself a ā€œscreen freeā€ camera, and I thought I’d take you along with us!

šŸ“· we’ll be hanging out at the studio…
And sharing lots of yarny fun along the way…

šŸ“· Like Christine finishing her hand knit socks knit from her hand dyed yarn, which she dyed herself at our studio dyeing workshop!
I’ve got a (probably unrealistic) goal of…

šŸ“· keeping my sanity intact this summer.
But whether or not I succeed, I’ll be taking photos on my silly little retro (incredibly budget) camera…

šŸ“· hopefully spending time with my lovely studio community…
And trying to hold onto my marbles, my small business, and remembering to fit in adventures with my two awesome little kiddos!

šŸ“· I’m hoping to spend less time checking and retaking pictures, more time living in the moment…
So welcome to Photo Friday!
Happy summer folks! Let’s make it a fabulous one!

Well hello there!

If you’re new here, this is the place to start!

šŸ“ø Start here

šŸ“ø Hi! I’m Laura
I’m an indie yarn dyer and yarn festival director from the most easterly town in England.

šŸ“ø I learnt to knit at the age of 6 and have loved it ever since.
I started The Lonely Knitter Podcast over on YouTube back in 2018, I was lonely and was looking for a community. A crafting community.

šŸ“ø Chattering away on YouTube turned into a journey exploring…
Creating an East Anglian Yarn Line
Making hand balm
Yarn Dyeing
Knitting pattern design
Starting a yarn festival
Opening a Yarn Studio

šŸŽ„ Now I rent the Norfolk Showground Arena every March to run East Anglia Yarn Festival.
More than 2000 people come together to share their love of crafts!

šŸ“ø And the rest of the year I welcome crafters to FOLK Yarn Studio, my yarn dyeing studio space in Oulton, Lowestoft!
You can join us for workshops, evening and daytime weekly crafting groups and open studio days!

šŸ“ø I’m a one woman business, trying to balance family life with small children, combined type ADHD and a random collection of physical health challenges.
I’ve found the most beautiful community, and you are so welcome here with us!

Commercial Hand Dyed Yarn vs Indie Hand Dyed Yarn

As someone that has been dyeing yarn for a living for the past 6 years, I would like to publicly answer a question I was asked this week.

Genuinely no beef towards KnitPro or any large scale manufacturing facilities that produce yarn and call it hand dyed.

Lots of companies operate under the ā€œsmall batchā€ loophole, dyeing in relatively small pots or lots (often 50-100 skeins of yarn at a time) rather than massive industrial vats. But they do often run dozens of these ā€œsmall batchesā€ simultaneously, turning it into a mass production line.

Because UK Trading Standards and advertising laws do not have a strict, legal definition for what constitutes ā€œindependent artisanā€ or ā€œsmall batchā€ in textiles, corporations can freely use these buzzwords.

Individual artists creating colourways and dyeing 3 skeins in a pan, trying to earn a living wage are not the same as a large scale overseas manufacturing facility, and they shouldn’t be treated as such.

Commercial yarns and yarns at all price points absolutely have a place in our wonderful crafting world, but hopefully not at the expense of our indie yarn dyer artist community ā¤ļøšŸ§¶ā¤ļø

Something exciting is coming, but for now I’m having to keep it quiet, because I am aware that the ā€œsunflower spyā€ is about šŸ™ˆ

In all seriousness though, this community is important to me, keeping my space safe is of ultimate importance. Staying quiet or saying ā€œthat’s just how they areā€ when someone is bullying or hurting others doesn’t make you innocent. Sometimes it makes you an enabler.

Protecting your peace doesn’t mean letting people off the hook šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

How has another month flown by?! It’s Open Studio Saturday again tomorrow!

10am-3pm the last Saturday of the month the studio is open for browsing and a sip and stitch group! No booking necessary, stay for as much or as little of the opening times as you’d like, I’ll make you a cuppa (or some squash), help yourself to a biscuit and bring a crafty project or choose a new one at the studio! I know some folks like to stay all day and have asked before, so here it is again… please feel free to bring yourself a packed lunch if you want to stay a while 🄰

The studio is air conditioned, there are ice lollies in the freezer and if you’re not loving the heatwave the studio is definitely the place to be!

Whether you come along to the studio or not, stay safe in this heat folks! I hope you’ll be up for joining me tomorrow ā¤ļø

Tomorrow is a big day for the studio! Come with me while I get everything ready!

It will be my first workshop Saturday! In the morning we have another Cottage Garden Yarn Dyeing Workshop and in the afternoon we have Mosaic Crochet!

The studio isn’t open for browsing tomorrow, we do that on the last Saturday of every month, tomorrow is just a special Saturday for workshops!

If you would like to snag one of the last remaining spots on either (or both) of these workshops you can find them over on the studio website, they will be coming down later tonight so that I can make sure everything is prepped ready for the morning.

A big thank you again to for letting us use the Piece of My Heart pattern for the workshop and for giving all workshop attendees a discount code for her amazing patterns! You’re a rockstar 🄰

I can’t wait for tomorrow! Thank you so much to everyone that has booked on already!

Last night was a big night for FOLK Yarn Studio, I held the first ever Studio Workshop!!!

8 wonderful attendees were all very gracious with a nervous me šŸ˜‚ and all of them created beautiful colourways with our cottage garden dye palette! I can’t wait to get them their finished yarn next week! Thank you so much for being the loveliest group ā¤ļø

As usual I forgot to take any photos or videos during the workshop, I was too busy chatting and having fun! But I also think that sometimes it’s important to be in the moment, so I’m not going to give myself a hard time on this one šŸ˜‚

There are 3 spots left on the next cottage garden palette dye workshop at the studio! So if you’d like to join me on Saturday 13th June then head over to the website for all the details, and whilst I’m talking about workshops, there are just 3 spots left on the mosaic crochet workshop that will also be held at the studio on 13th June! All the details can be found on the workshop section on the website too if you’re interested! ā¤ļø

For now I give you the one picture I did take last night, of the table after the workshop, and the studio now, all ready for tonight’s group of stitchers to come and sip and stitch the night away!

Thank you!!! I have had the best day with the loveliest people ā¤ļø as always, I forget to take pictures! I’m too busy having a lovely time! But here’s what I have!

Swipe to the end to see what my 6 year old got up to at home with paper and sellotape šŸ˜‚

Thank you to everyone that shopped my destash! I really do love everything in my stash, I just love my family more and want to get us camping! We sold enough yarn to buy not just our tent, but some equipment we will need too!

And now something not so nice, but I feel it needs to be said, and I’d rather put it at the end of a happy post than give it it’s own. It feels more balanced…

Someone locally has been enacting some underhand and in my opinion unethical practices to try and further their business by harming mine. I’m sad, I have done nothing but lift up and champion this business, I distanced myself quietly in the past year after multiple negative experiences for myself and people I care about. But tried to give the benefit of the doubt, I truly believe this sort of behaviour is often the result of insecurity or pain. But in the past month I have been targeted for more unkind behaviour. I want to mention this as customers and business owners have told me this person has been saying we are good friends. I won’t be naming them in this post but please check with me before working with someone because they say they are local to me or know the organiser of EAYF. I will happily rave about businesses that I have loved working with, but unfortunately some people will act as if they’re friendly with other business owners to advance their business, when behind the scenes these friendships do not exist and their business ethics do not align with mine.

Here’s my hot take… we can all choose. Do we want to trample on someone else to try and make more money or look like ā€œtop dogā€ OR do we want to make this community a better, kinder place? I know which I’d rather ā¤ļø

It’s open studio Saturday tomorrow!!!

10am-3pm on the last Saturday of every month the studio is open for browsing and for a sip and stitch group! No booking necessary, stay for as much or as little of the opening times as you’d like, I’ll make you a cuppa, help yourself to a biscuit and bring a crafty project or pick a new one at the studio! I know some folks were keen to stay all day and have asked before, so to clarify… please feel free to bring yourself a packed lunch if you want to stay for the whole day 🄰

I’ve had a little move around at the studio, which means some of our stock is a little more accessible, and the charity book nook has moved to the other end of the studio where it’s much easier to get to too!

I am also having a major yarn destash this month! I have been ruthless with my much loved yarn stash that has been built up of mainly hand dyed yarn over the past 8 years, but my kiddos have been asking to go camping for the past 2 years and we’ve finally managed to convince the husband! So now I need to find the money to buy a tent and some camping basics! I’ve pulled out more than 100 skeins of hand dyed yarn, I’ve made up mini sets and there’s a little commercial yarn too! This is my own personal stash, nothing to do with the studio, so I can’t take card payments for it as it isn’t owned by my business, i see it as a tiny yarn carboot at work šŸ˜‚ I can take cash or bank transfer for destash yarn and I’m not currently looking at selling any of it online, just in person. If it doesn’t sell, that’s ok, I still love it, I just love my kiddos more and I want that tent! So if it doesn’t sell I’ll be going back to the drawing board, and tucking it back into my stash! Destash yarn is in my opinion at bargain prices, around Ā£12 per 100g with extra discounts on some sweater quantity bundles!

Please do come and join me for a crafty day, whether a yarn destash is your thing or not, you’re so welcome šŸ§¶ā¤ļø
