What If? Film Club

As part of Make/Change’s support for Dumfries Pride 2026, What If? Film Club and Qu**rs of the South are bringing two brilliant q***r films to Studio Moffat this September.

On Sunday 13 September, Q***r as Punk follows the members of Malaysian q***r punk band Shh…Diam! as they make music, challenge expectations and create space to live as themselves. We’ll also be holding a zine-making workshop exploring what it means to be q***r in a rural place.

Then, on Sunday 20 September, we’re screening Pride—the funny, warm and defiant true story of the le***an and gay activists who supported striking miners in 1984, and the unexpected solidarity that grew between two very different communities. Afterwards, there’ll be time to continue the conversation over tea and home baking, and to think about what helps create safety and belonging for LGBTQIA+ people in rural areas today.

Both screenings begin at 2pm and are Pay What You Can, because we want everyone to be able to come.

What was Greenham Common?

For 19 years, thousands of women lived, campaigned and stood together at Greenham Common in one of the longest-running protests in British history.

Many younger people have never heard of it.

Gentle, Angry Women follows three young women as they discover the story of Greenham Common and explore what it might mean for their generation today.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us on Friday evening for the Scottish premiere of Woman Grows Jeans at Studio Moffat.

It was a fascinating film and a real privilege to be joined afterwards by filmmaker and textile artist Justine Aldersey-Williams of The Wild Dyery for a thought-provoking and wide-ranging live Q&A.

The film sparked a lively discussion about clothing, sustainability, local production and traditional and heritage skills that have been forgotten or discarded in favour of industrialisation.

Thank you to Justine for inspiring us with her story, and to everyone who came along for the film and the conversation afterwards. Another hugely enjoyable and inspiring evening!

If you missed it, don't worry — our next What If? Film Club screening is Gentle, Angry Women on Sunday 29 June, exploring the legacy of the Greenham Common Women's Peace Camp through the eyes of a new generation of young activists.

Did you know that Woman Grows Jeans began as a collaboration between textile artist Justine Aldersey-Williams and fashion designer Patrick Grant, best known as a judge on BBC's Great British Sewing Bee?

Together they set out to answer an extraordinary question:

Could a pair of jeans be grown entirely on British soil?

What followed was a years-long experiment involving flax, indigo, spinning, weaving, dyeing and sewing. More than 600 hours later, Justine created the UK's first pair of homegrown jeans.

This Friday we're delighted to host the Scottish premiere of Woman Grows Jeans at Studio Moffat.

After the screening, Justine will be joining us live online for a Q&A.
