Migration is often relegated into the corners of the film industry, with films that solely focus on the negative experience of displacement. Through LMFF we aim to reframe the discussion in which migrants are conceived solely in binary terms, as enemies or as victims, and rather highlight the diversity, nuance and subjective experience within migration and ultimately, the humanity of it. Building
on the success of previous editions, we will do this in a number of ways: films shown will focus on increasing awareness of migratory experiences through an inclusive and varied programme of migration-related films. The eclectic films will cover a range of forms and issues embedded within migration, from the intersection of gender, sexuality and post-colonialism with mobility, to the economic/forced migration nexus. There is not a single story of migration, nor a single place where it happens, ironically making migration one of the most diverse and complex experiences. LMFF was started in 2016 by Migration Collective, a group of dynamic and creative individuals each holding academic interest in and personal experiences of migration. Our unique projects, events and activities tackle the intersection of art, academia and action in order to challenge the mainstream rhetoric on migration.
