🎉 Exciting news! This year we celebrate the 40th anniversary edition of LIFF, and Leeds commemorates the milestone of 400 years since receiving its first Royal Charter in 1626, the beginning of its journey towards city status.

As part of our activities for this special year, we are launching an open call for a Leeds-based artist to create the official artwork for LIFF 2026.

This paid opportunity will greatly increase awareness for the work of a local artist, with their artwork appearing on the front cover of the LIFF Guide, on digital and physical advertising, on posters, on our website and social media, in our venues, and more. This will also help to bring national and international visibility to the fantastic creative talent that Leeds has to offer.

🎉 Leeds Young Film Festival starts this Saturday! Leeds Young Film

Alongside workshops and classic family films, LYFF is also a rare chance to see independent international cinema for young audiences on the big screen, from bold animation to high-energy adventures.

LYFF Programmer Ellie shares some highlights to catch over the Easter Holidays:

🚀 Space Cadet - A firm favourite at LIFF 2025, Space Cadet returns! Following a young girl named Celeste and the Guardianbot she loves dearly, this dialogue-free animation from Canada is a heartfelt journey of connection and growing up. Featuring original songs by Karen O, it’s a feast for both the eyes and ears for all ages.

⏳ MOMO - Starring Martin Freeman and based on the classic children’s book, we present the UK Premiere of MOMO, a high-tempo fantasy adventure following little MOMO and her turtle as they fight against mysterious time-stealers who invade her city. We’ll even be joined by MOMO herself, actress Alexa Goodall at the screening.

🔍 Finding Optel - Presented in partnership with Cinema Africa at The Hyde Park Picture House, Finding Optel is a hilarious and quirky detective story set in a close-knit community in Cape Town. When the community dog, Optel, goes missing, teen detective Claire sets out on a heartwarming adventure of self-discovery. Set in a community we rarely see represented in family films, Finding Optel is a really special film that had its premiere at BFI London Film Festival 2025.

🎨 Hola Frida - Ever wondered where famous artists get their creativity from? In Hola Frida!, we get a unique look into the life of a young Frida Kahlo, and her naughty dog Chiquita, as she faces her illness and disability with overflowing imagination. Vibrant and sparkling, this whimsical animation shows us how embracing our differences can inspire the world.

🏰 My Life in Versailles - Nominated for the César Award for Best Animated Film, My Life in Versailles follows eight-year-old Violet, who moves in with her gruff uncle Regis after her parents pass away. Working as the caretaker at the Palace of Versailles, they at first struggle to connect, but soon the stunning and historical setting provides a space for them to learn more about each other. Full of heart and humour, My Life in Versailles is a charming story of discovery and acceptance.

🚌 Future Council - Millions of children around the world are frustrated by the lack of action to protect the planet and their future. In Future Council, Director Damon Gameau invites eight children on an epic adventure across Europe in a school bus powered by biofuel. A rollicking journey that shows children what can happen when they use their voices and dare to dream about changing the world.

💃 Dancing Queen 2 in Hollywood - Dancing Queen was a hit at LYFF 2024, and hip hop dancer Mina is back, this time in Hollywood! After Mina and Markus win a trip to LA to star in a music video, things are a little different to the lives they’re used to in Norway. Dealing with first loves, self-confidence and awkward parents, can Mina deal with the stress of the Hollywood lifestyle and get her big break in a major film? A wonderful sequel to Aurora Gossé’s 2023 debut, but also a brilliant standalone film, Dancing Queen in Hollywood is an energetic comedy that’s sure to be a hit with all young aspiring stars.

🏆 A huge congratulations to Leeds filmmaker Alfie Barker, who was recently announced as the winner of the second edition of The Dream Makers: Short Film Contest by CUPRA at the 76th Berlin International Film Festival.

We’ve known Alfie since he was 8 years old, after he signed up for an animation workshop at Leeds Young Film Festival, which further sparked his growing interest in filmmaking. He went on to return to LYFF for multiple festivals, eventually joining MediaFish (LYF young programmers' group). At 16, Alfie joined the BFI Film Academy Leeds, hosted by Leeds Young Film.

“Looking back, that early exposure to diverse cinema shaped how I think about storytelling and making films that resonate. LYFF also ran short film competitions, which gave me the belief I could make something and see it on the big screen. That validation early on was hugely inspiring.” - Alfie Barker, State of the Arts, October 12, 2025

Since then, Alfie has gone on to achieve incredible success including winning Best British Short at Leeds International Film Festival 2023 for his short film Half Way, alongside other wins at BFI London Film Festival and Encounters Film Festival for his previous short, ‘Hanging On’.

Winning The Dream Makers: Short Film Contest promoted by CUPRA, together with Berlinale, Berlinale Talents and Studio Babelsberg means Alfie will now have the opportunity to produce his next short film, The Zebra, and bring it to the big screen.

A huge congratulations to Alfie and it's great to see his hard work paying off. We’ve loved being part of his filmmaking journey so far, and we can’t wait to see what’s next for him.
