HONEST THIEF (2020)
This is the latest action-thriller offering from Amazon Prime. Starring Liam Neeson, Kate Walsh and Robert Patrick, this movie has some serious credentials in the viewing factors, which it does...but that is also , for me, is where it ends.
Neeson plays Tom Dolan, who is like this super expert bank robber who over a decade steals $9million from various banks. No one has a clue who he is as he's that good and doesn't leave a trace. However, Tom meets Annie (Kate Walsh) and cupid spins some magic and the arrows fly into the hearts of Tom and Anne. So much so that Tom want's to come clean with with past, and then with Annie.
This is when it goes t**s up for Tom. Hoping to cut a deal with the FBI, he agrees to return all the money in exchange for a reduced sentence so that he can eventually spend the rest of his days with Annie. That would be too easy right? Two agents show up to bring him in. They soon realise $9 million is a lot of cash and set Tom up for murder. Tom must go on the run and somehow clear his name if he has any chance of a future with beloved Annie. The action is so so and the movie just drifts along and doesn't seem pacy enough. There just didn't feel a sense of danger or urgency in the movie.
Liam Neeson has made some quality movies. The original Taken was one of his very best. But a lot of things he has done since seem to be a very weak Taken. This one is another of those. The 'Bryan Mills' type of character has been bled dryer than the Star Wars franchise by Disney. (Ok, maybe not as much, but you get my drift).
The plot is simple, but weak. There doesn't really seem any reason to hand himself in as he was basically anonymous and there was no heat or pressure on to him to do so. There seemed to be far better options than to risk a deal.
With saying all this, Neeson is still good for the money. He can carry a film on his back, and has done so a few times. While i found this film average at best, there was no denying Neesons performance and it was this that keeps the level of interest high enough to crawl to the end.
In all honesty, i am not a big fan of Amazon/Netflix/Sky Originals. I always find they lack a certain something. All pretty and built up to be Blockbuster hits, when really they are just glorified and glossy TV movies with albeit bigger stars in them.
In the last year, it has been a tough time for the movie industry. The likes of Amazon and Netflix have at least given us something to watch, which is kind, but it's not top end cinema quality. This is 'Microwaveable meals' quality. You watch it because there's nothing else to watch. Once you watch it, you realise your life hasn't been bettered for doing so and dread how bad the additives etc are going to be for you.
For now, this will do. Honest Thief is something to watch, and passes an hour or two. But, this isn't close to being the blockbuster Amazon Prime lead you to believe.
