60 Years a Cinema 1965-2025 🎈

The Palace is small, welcoming, independent and family-run, offering a programme of quality mainstream, independent and world cinema for locals and visitors alike! It's usually open 7 days a week, offering at least two choices of film plus special events including 'Palace Sunday Silents', monthly silent films with live piano accompaniment Sept-June. The cinema is deceptively small from the street-front; inside at street level there is a little foyer (with a lovely range of snacks and drinks, and fully licensed) and balcony. Stairs from the foyer lead down to the stalls, and we have step-free access at the rear of the building. The Palace is housed in a lovely Grade II listed building. Originally a shipwrights stood on the site until in the 1910s it was transformed into the more elegant, and solid, 'York Gate Hall' to house the armour collection of Sir Guy Laking, whose family holidayed next door in York Gate House. From the late 1910s-1960s the hall was hired out in the season for puppet shows and 16mm cartoon shows before being converted into a cinema by local cinema entrepreneur Jack Field, who originally named it the 'Windsor'. It was re-named the Palace in 2006 by the third owners, Colin Jay and Sean Mills, who undertook a large scale renovation and installation of larger screen plus digital sound & projection.

LATE FAME - Funny, bittersweet tale of a former downtown poet now a postman (Willem Dafoe) who finds himself ‘rediscovered’.

DE GAULLE: RESISTANCE - Part 1 of powerful, moving and insightful 2-part epic biopic of the great French leader through WW2 from young army officer to the heart of a nation. Part 2 LIBERTE coming up next week.

No kidding! “Nobody's perfect!" has been one of the Palace's most fun film seasons ever.

Many, many thanks to everyone who came along, with special mention to the Billy Wilder lovers who saw them all with their season cards, 6th/7th films for free.

Many thanks to our speakers who took to the Palace stage to explore Wilder, his contemporaries and collaborators. A wealth of inspiring and revealing perspectives from Amber Butchart, Jack Prosser, Simon Audley, Jack Goldstein and Jessica Lauren.

Many thanks to Film Hub South East for supporting "Nobody's perfect!", a season also including dementia friendly morning shows running through to mid-December - see website for details! They're free, there are drinks and snacks to start, plus lovely chat before and after with facilitator Tom Adams.

Final thanks to Billy Wilder, for SUNSET BOULEVARD, THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH, WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION, SOME LIKE IT HOT, THE APARTMENT ("That's the way it crumbles... cookie-wise"), DOUBLE INDEMNITY and SABRINA. What a line up, and that not the half of it ❤️

Audrey Hepburn costume tests at Paramount for SABRINA, clothes helping tell the tale of the tomboy daughter of a rich family’s chauffeur who goes away to Paris and returns transformed on the outside but still the same gal inside….

The classic 1954 romcom also starring Humphrey Bogart and William Holden is the final screening in the Palace’s Billy Wilder season, with special introduction from fashion historian Amber Butchart.

The first ever feature horror, atmospheric, unpredictable and full of incredible design, Robert Wiene’s classic of German Expressionism has been shaking cinema goers since its release in 1920, screening at the Palace with a spine chilling orchestral score.

Shaun and his pals are shocked to see that the pumpkins for their Halloween party have been trampled but our favourite sheep will not be downcast! He channels his inner mad scientist to create a secret potion to grow the pumpkins back super fast. What could possibly go wrong..? Oh, plenty, and a ton of fun to be had while it does… not only is the cracking dialogue-free script delivered by original voice cast including Justin ‘Mr Tumble’ Fletcher, but there are classic Aardman puns and much joy in refs to classic horrors from Young Frankenstein to Psycho to Night of the Living Dead.
