We are hearing how important engagement and companionship is for the elderly. Chit Chat and Chores is one of the first dedicated agencies to provide this locally. It was set up to support those who were struggling with isolation during lockdown.

We are very thankful and also very excited to have received our first referral from St Peter's Hospital. That's one ward and a discharge department discussing our services with private funding patients waiting to go home. As well as this, another medical hub and two more memory clinics are asking for more information and that's just this week. ⭐️

Chit Chat and Chores, whilst helpful and engaging, we are about the wellness of your loved one. With understanding, empathy and engagement, we are helping our clients live their best life, and evidence is telling us.....for longer. We are helping with their wellness!

So let's talk about dopamine.

Dopamine is a chemical messenger or neurotransmitter made in your brain. It helps nerve cells talk to each other. It plays a big part in how you feel pleasure, stay motivated, and move your body.

Main Functions of Dopamine
* Reward and Pleasure: Your brain releases dopamine when you do fun things like eat good food, win a game, or rest. This makes you want to do those things again.
* Motivation: It helps drive you to reach goals and finish tasks.
* Movement: It helps your body make smooth and controlled movements.
* Focus and Memory: It helps you pay attention, learn new things, and remember tasks.

Normal aging brings natural changes to the brain's dopamine system, including a reduction in dopamine receptors and transporters (by roughly 5% to 10% per decade). These shifts impact motor control, memory consolidation, and cognitive flexibility, though non-pharmacological lifestyle habits can naturally support dopamine pathways.

Effects of Aging on Dopamine
* Receptor Loss: D1 and D2 dopamine receptors in areas like the striatum and prefrontal cortex naturally decline with age.
* Compensatory Synthesis: Some older adults show elevated dopamine synthesis capacity, acting as a buffer against brain structural shrinkage and cognitive decline.
* Motor and Cognitive Changes: Lower dopamine availability correlates with slower gait, reduced balance, slower processing speeds, and challenges with working memory.

Natural Ways to Support Dopamine in Older Adults

* Physical Activity: Moderate, regular exercise helps maintain motor function and stimulates neurotransmitter health.
* Social Connection: Meaningful interactions, positive verbal recognition, and physical warmth (like hand massages or hugging pets) trigger reward and bonding pathways without relying on short-term memory.
* Engaging Routines: Gardening, listening to favorite music, and partaking in enjoyable hobbies provide safe, positive stimulation

This is why Chit Chat and Chores is so good for your relative. Of late we have sung, we have danced, we have gone on drives just to buy a Mr Whippy, and why not? We have fed ducks, we have gone for dinner, driven to a client's favourite tea shop, singing to Abba on the way, we have joined in with a pub quiz, painted nails, turned the foot spa on. We have seen Royalty, we have been to the pub (many times) and, of course, stayed in and watched Only Fools and Horses. We have listened for hours about the past and our clients know how much we love listening to them.

Monday at 10am - pop in to see us. We offer a friendly, welcoming, safe space for all.

The village hall is very accessible. The refreshments are very reasonably priced.....and if you need a little bit of direction because someone you care for is acting a little differently, Surrey Dementia Champions will be available for a chat.

We are pet friendly and can walk your dog and your cat if required 😀. We can feed fish too. Not so keen on tarantulas or those dragon things though but can marvel from afar.
