13 miles of water, centuries of connections. Get a whole different story at the Discover Ulster-Scots Centre, in Belfast’s Cathedral Quarter. A spacious exhibition gallery, open Monday to Friday from 10am-4pm, it’s packed with stories that you’ll not be able to find in most other museums. And entry is free of charge! Even though Ulster and Scotland are just 13 miles apart, the story of the close c

onnections can be hard to find in most museums. Here at the Discover Ulster-Scots Centre you can discover thousands of years of history, from the formation of the Giant’s Causeway (which links County Antrim with the Western Isles of Scotland) right up to the present day.

• the exhibition panels cover ten major stories, starting with the arrival of Edward Bruce in 1315
• the timeline room shows how events in Ulster link with Scotland and the rest of the world
• the language and literature area gives examples of Ulster-Scots publishing, as well as words most people use every day
• a large journey planner map highlights other Ulster-Scots places to visit
• audio-visual terminals allow you to watch films and search databases
• display cases feature rare artefacts and publications
• free literature available, much of which isn’t available elsewhere
• gift shop offering books, CDs and tartanwares

The Centre is located within the historic Belfast Corn Exchange building which dates from 1852. In 1859 the Corn Exchange hosted a major Robert Burns centenary event which was attended by Burns’ descendants who lived in the city. The Discover Ulster-Scots Centre also hosts a range of events during the year, so keep an eye on our events programme to see what’s on next. So why not drop in next time you’re in Cathedral Quarter? Our friendly and knowledgable staff will answer any questions you have and will give you advice on other places to visit. Opening Hours: Monday–Friday, 10am–4pm

There are some very exciting events coming up in North Antrim, as Cullybackey Community Partnership (CCP) celebrates several people who left the community in the 1700s and played a part in events leading to American Independence in 1776 🇺🇸😀

To tell their stories, CCP has developed an exhibition, published a booklet, and will be hosting a series of three talks – all separate and different from each other - on the 1st, 8th and 22nd of June at the Maine Business Centre.

The venue will open at 6.45pm to allow folk time to view the exhibition, with the talks beginning at 7pm, and the booklet will be made available. Everyone is very welcome to attend 🙂

The talks are all free, but booking is necessary. Secure your place today on the CCP website - https://cullybackeycommunitypartnership.co.uk/ 🎟️

The project has been made possible through funding from via the USA NI 250 Fund 🫱🏻‍🫲🏼

The fantastic setting of the Galgorm Resort this morning saw the launch of Cullybackey Community Partnership’s Ordinary People Extraordinary History exhibition as part of the programme funded by Department for Communities. Wonderful hearing the stories of folk from these shores and the impact they made on the stories of the United States. There will be a series of talks to accompany the exhibition and an educational resource as well, so keep watching for links on our socials.

Another very popular feature in the most recent edition of The Ulster-Scot was a special piece about the wonderful work being undertaken in Tubrid, Kesh, County Fermanagh 🎵🙂

The integrated approach adopted by the folks in Tubrid, using Ulster-Scots Summer Schools to generate and drive interest in Highland Dancing, piping, drumming, and all the various elements of Ulster-Scots culture and heritage, is a terrific example of how joined-up thinking can yield excellent results for the entire community.

On Ulster-Scots Day, when we mark the anniversary of Ulster-Scots being recognised as a national minority of the United Kingdom under the Framework Convention for the protection of National Minorities, it’s s wonderful to be able share an inspiring Good News story! 💙😀
