Africa is often perceived in Europe as an emblem of poverty, ‘traditional’ lifestyle, violence, wondrous nature and exoticism. These images and conceptions do not correspond to a ‘natural’ perception of Africa. However, various films from and about Africa provide an enormous diversity of perspectives and reflect innovative and creative approaches to film making. The film serie

s « African Cinema » intends to counter excluding viewing patterns and develop a platform in Basel for films from and about Africa. In addition to watching the films, the framework program provides space to reflect on the films and debate topics around it with filmmakers, ‘experts’, artists and viewers.
