The Matriarchs as an organisation is first and foremost a community that aims to support women who are working to address environmental and humanitarian issues.

Today we’re celebrating the women out in the field doing the hard work of conservation.

Whether they’re tracking wildlife, protecting habitats, working with communities or responding to challenges on the ground, female rangers play an important role in protecting our natural world.

We’ve been fortunate to meet many incredible women on our assignments, each bringing their own passion, knowledge and determination to the job.

Thank you to all the female rangers who dedicate their lives to protecting wildlife and wild places. Your work matters.

On Bicycle Day, we celebrate the women of the Bwindi Women Bicycle Project, an initiative creating opportunity on the edge of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

From repairing and building bicycles to renting them to visitors and providing affordable transport to local communities, these women are doing far more than keeping bicycles on the road. They are gaining skills, building independence, and creating new opportunities for themselves and their families.

It is a reminder that meaningful change often starts with something simple. In this case, a bicycle has become a tool for empowerment, helping women move forward while strengthening the communities around them.

Stephanie Nyirahumure works as a community health worker in Rwanda, helping families access healthcare where they need it most.

Her story is a reminder that impact isn’t always loud. Sometimes it looks like a conversation, a home visit, a child receiving care, or a mother finding support.

Today we celebrate the women who are quietly and boldly shaping a better future for people and the planet. Women have always been powerful catalysts for change, using their voices, knowledge, and compassion to uplift communities and protect the natural world. Their dedication, courage, and resilience inspire us deeply.

Through our NGO, .foundation , we look forward to sharing more of these remarkable stories and shining a light on the important work these women are doing.

While on assignment with A&K Sanctuary we visited the Bwindi Women Bicycle Project, a women-led initiative based near Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.

The project centres around bicycles as tools for independence and income. Women lead guided bike tours through the community, learn bicycle mechanics, and use these skills to support their families. It was inspiring to see how something as simple as a bicycle can create opportunity, confidence and freedom of movement.

Spending time with these women reminded us how powerful women-focused projects can be when they are rooted in real needs and local leadership.

Meet Ronja, a field officer with the Endangered Wildlife Trust in the Greater Kruger. Every day she tracks wild dog packs, treats injuries, and jumps into emergencies because with only around 650 wild dogs left in South Africa, every action counts. Her work is hands-on, unpredictable, and deeply impactful, keeping packs alive and communities connected.

She also works with farmers and local communities to reduce conflict and build practical solutions for coexistence. Quiet, steady, and dedicated, Ronja shows how one person can make a real difference for wildlife and people alike.
