The Journey

Following the journey of filmmaker Ursula over an 8 year period, A Northern Journey delves into the lives of Indigenous Canadians in remote Northern Alberta communities and the lingering challenges they face post-colonization.

The community of Peace River is nestled in a beautiful valley where the Smoky and Peace Rivers ebb and flow through untouched wilderness. The town has a history dating back to the early days of the fur trade, when local tribes were still living off the land and English was a foreign language.

Racial tensions exist in subtle and obvious ways, ingrained and habituated. The quality of life on a reservation does not match that of life in town. This film explores the societal impacts of borders within borders and a painful past that cannot be escaped.
