Métis Week 2025 – Schedule of Events
November 15–23, 2025
Join us throughout Métis Week as we come together in celebration of our proud Métis heritage — our history, our stories, our music, and our resilience. From traditional teachings and hands-on workshops to laughter-filled gatherings and lively dancing, there’s something for everyone.
All are welcome — come share in the joy of Métis culture!

The events listed below are hosted by various organizations and community partners across Calgary. This schedule serves as a community guide to Métis Week activities that have been shared with us.
Saturday, November 15 – Pre-Métis Week Event
1:00 PM – 3:30 PM | Film Screening: Lii Michif Niiyanaan – Central Library
Location: Central Library, Level 1 – Patricia A. Whelan Performance Hall
Who are the Métis? In this powerful documentary, Métis Elders, artists, activists, and scholars explore the unique history of the Métis Nation in Canada and share their perspectives on what it means to be Métis today.
Enjoy a lively Métis jigging demonstration before the screening, followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers afterward.
A wonderful way to begin Métis Week in celebration and reflection.

Monday, November 17 – Opening Day
11:30 AM – 1:00 PM | City Hall Flag Raising Ceremony
Begin Métis Week with pride as the Métis flag is raised at City Hall. Join community members, Elders, and leaders as we honour our ancestors and celebrate Métis identity together.
1:00 PM | Métis Trappers Tent and Flower Teachings – Mount Royal University
Step into the trappers tent to experience Métis teachings firsthand — from the art of flower beadwork to the stories behind traditional ways of life.
2:00 PM | Métis Week Flag Raising – Mount Royal University
Gather with the MRU community as they raise the Métis flag in honour of Métis Week.
Tuesday, November 18 – Honouring Our Roots
9:00 AM – 4:00 PM | Wool Blanket Project – Old Region 3 Office
Roll up your sleeves for a hands-on day of crafting and connection. The Wool Blanket Project symbolizes the warmth and unity of our community — come add your touch.
10:00 AM | Métis Genealogy and History with Elder Louise Crane – Mount Royal University
Discover where you come from. Elder Louise Crane shares stories of Métis ancestry, family lines, and the spirit of those who came before us.
1:00 PM | Métis Journey of Trapping and Hunting – Mount Royal University
Experience the heart of the Métis way of life through traditional teachings about trapping, hunting, and living with the land.
1:30 PM | History and Traditions of the Red River Cart – Mount Royal University
Learn the stories behind the iconic Red River Cart — a symbol of movement, trade, and the strength of our people.
6:00 PM – 9:00 PM | Mix and Mingle – The Confluence
An evening of good company and laughter. Share light snacks, music, Métis artisan market an conversations as we reconnect as a community.
Wednesday, November 19 – Sharing Our Stories
10:00 AM | Métis Beading and Crafts – Mount Royal University
Celebrate Métis artistry in a morning of beading, creating, and sharing. Bring your creativity — and your stories!
3:00 PM | Métis Identity and the Effects of Colonization – Mount Royal University
An important conversation on identity, resilience, and the continuing journey of reclaiming our voices and stories.
4:30 PM – 6:00 PM | Jean Teillet Presentation and Film Screening – University of Calgary
Ten years have passed since the Truth and Reconciliation Commission issued its Calls to Action, yet the struggle for justice in education and law continues. This event invites reflection on what progress has been made — and how educators, legal professionals, and Indigenous communities can continue advancing the TRC’s vision of equity and justice.
Join Jean Teillet, author, retired lawyer, and Métis rights advocate, as she examines the evolving legal and educational landscape of reconciliation in Canada. With a lifetime of advocacy before Canada’s highest courts, Teillet will speak to the power of education as a site of resistance, responsibility, and renewal for reconciliation.

Thursday, November 20 – Art, Music, and Story

10:00 AM | Métis Genealogy and History with Elder Louise Crane – Mount Royal University
Elder Crane returns to share more teachings and stories of Métis families, roots, and pride.
1:00 PM | Fiddlestick Jiggers – The Denby Family – Mount Royal University
Tap your toes and clap along as the Denby Family brings the spirit of the fiddle and jig to life! A joyful celebration of Métis music and dance.
Friday, November 21 – Community and Connection
11:00 AM – 12:00 PM | Lougheed House Flag Raising Ceremony
Join us for another proud flag raising at Lougheed House — a celebration of Métis presence, past and present.
11:00 AM – 1:00 PM | Soup and Bannock – Métis Housing
Enjoy a warm bowl of soup and fresh bannock while catching up with friends and neighbours — a true taste of community.
1:00 PM | Métis Trappers Tent and Flower Teachings – Mount Royal University
Return to the trappers tent for more cultural teachings, artistry, and storytelling.
1:00 PM | Experience Métis: Fish Scales / Arts and Crafts – Mount Royal University
Get creative with traditional fish scale art and crafts — a unique Métis art form rich in beauty and symbolism.
Saturday, November 22 – Family and Celebration

A morning of Métis-themed crafts for kids — fun, colourful, and full of learning!
11:00 AM – 12:00 PM | Métis Fireside Stories with Elder Art Cunningham – The Confluence
Gather by the fire for storytelling and wisdom shared by Elder Art Cunningham — a peaceful and heartfelt experience.
1:00 PM – 4:00 PM | Family Bingo – Rundle Community Centre
Bring the whole family for an afternoon of fun, laughter, and prizes!
5:30 PM – 7:00 PM | Métis Potluck Dinner – Rundle Community Centre
Share food, friendship, and stories over a community potluck — a true celebration of togetherness.
Bring your favourite homemade recipe to share, and join in creating a delicious feast that reflects the heart of our community.
We’ll also be gathering everyone’s favourite dishes into an online Métis community recipe collection — a shared resource to celebrate our food, family traditions, and kitchen stories.

2:00 PM – 3:00 PM | Métis Memories in the Landscape Tour – The Confluence
Join this guided walking tour exploring Calgary’s Métis history and deep connections to the land — honouring those who came before and the stories that still live here.
