In honour of its 60th birthday, BLACK GIRL returns to the big screen in a new 4K restoration! Ousmane Sembène ’s stirring feature debut reveals the agony of the postcolonial experience.

Sembène is often called the father of African cinema. His austere visual style and elliptical narrative structure show how identity can be erased precisely within the most domestic of spaces. He transforms a deceptively simple plot—about a young Senegalese woman who moves to France to work for a wealthy white family and finds that life in their small apartment becomes a prison, both figuratively and literally—into a complexly layered critique of the lingering colonialist mindset of a supposedly postcolonial world.

Featuring a moving central performance by M’Bissine Thérèse Diop, BLACK GIRL is a harrowing human drama as well as a radical political statement. Sixty years later, the film’s moral force remains just as urgent, precisely because Sembène shows how colonial relations do not disappear with independence, but continue to shape language, labour, ownership, and the intimate relations of everyday life.

🎶 Live, loud, and dark: De Cinema, Het Bos, and Sound in Motion collaborate for a special screening of Philippe Garrel’s cult classic 𝘓𝘦 𝘙é𝘷é𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘶𝘳 (1968), featuring a brand-new soundtrack by Radwan Ghazi Moumneh and Réka Csiszér during our next edition of RE/SCORED!

Shot in the aftermath of May ’68, 𝘓𝘦 𝘙é𝘷é𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘶𝘳 is instinctive and elusive—a radical work that resists interpretation and demands to be experienced. In the underground film, a man, a woman, and a child wander through a desolate landscape. What they are fleeing from remains unclear, but the threat is ever-present…

Garrel, the rebellious heir to the French New Wave, abandons conventional storytelling to create a hypnotic dreamscape where fear and liberation constantly overlap, leading viewers through a labyrinth of dark tunnels and symbolic landscapes.

Using cello, buzuq, rababa, voice, electronics and analogue synthesizers, Moumneh and Csiszér construct a haunting sonic world that perfectly complements Garrel’s visionary images. Their new soundtrack moves between minimalism and tension, stillness and disorientation, breathing new life into the film without diminishing its mystery.

🪖 We’re screening Terrence Malick’s epic war film on 35mm, as part of ZOMERFILMCOLLEGE 2026’s strand on the “cinema of poetry”. 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘯 𝘙𝘦𝘥 𝘓𝘪𝘯𝘦 marked Malick’s infamous return to filmmaking after a 20-year absence, earning him the Golden Bear and seven Oscar nominations.

Sean Penn, Adrien Brody, Woody Harrelson, John Cusack, Jim Caviezel, Nick Nolte, Ben Chaplin, and many others play a group of young men from the Army Rifle Company ‘C-for-Charlie’, deployed to fight in the Guadalcanal campaign. The horror of the Second World War brings the soldiers closer together, but as their group grows smaller, the original reason for the battle takes a back seat, and survival is the only thing that matters.

Introduced by film critic Adrian Martin. Thanks to for the 35mm copy.

🇯🇵 A contemporary of Ozu and Kurosawa, the prolific Mikio Naruse is considered a “major figure of Japan’s Golden Age”, even though he remains lesser known than his peers. As part of 𝗭𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗺𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲, we are screening Naruse’s masterpiece 𝘍𝘭𝘰𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘊𝘭𝘰𝘶𝘥𝘴 on 35mm!

In the film, Yukiko works as a secretary for a forestry project under the Japanese wartime government. She has an affair with one of the engineers, Kengo, who promises to leave his wife for her. Later, when she ends up in Tokyo, she reconnects with her lover. They rekindle their relationship, but he refuses to leave his sickly wife.

Introduced by Professor Ben Singer of the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Thanks to CINEMATEK for the 35mm copy.
