CELEBRATING CINEMA
De Cinema verwent dagelijks filmliefhebbers met een uitgebreid programma. De Cinema is een samenwerking tussen M HKA en De Studio.

De Cinema bevindt zich in de Maarschalk Gérardstraat 4, 2000 Antwerpen, centraal aan het Mechelseplein. Je kan ons bereiken met tram 4, 7, 12 en 24 of bus 1, 13, 22, 290 en 500. De dichtstbijzijnde Velo fietsstations zijn 084-Elzenveld en 073-Maarschalk Gérard.

How Much Land Does a Man Require? is de Engelse titel van een kort verhaal uit 1886 van Leo Tolstoj. In hedendaagse termen zou het antwoord kunnen zijn: 2 m² – de grootte van een graf. Dat is de sector waarin de in Genk gevestigde Tayfun Veli Arslan’o succes heeft gevonden: het ter aarde bestellen van overledenen. Toch vergezelt hem bij bijna elke begrafenis één specifieke vraag: waar moet de laatste rustplaats precies zijn? De meeste mensen die zijn diensten nodig hebben, zijn immigranten of hun nakomelingen, en veel families verkiezen hun dierbaren niet in Belgische grond te begraven, maar in het land van herkomst. Die keuze brengt complicaties met zich mee, soms ernstig, soms absurd, en Arslan’o heeft geleerd om daarmee om te gaan met een strak gezicht en een opmerkelijke dosis droge humor.

Op woensdag 10 juni gaat de film in première in Antwerpen. Filmmaker Volkan Üce zal de vertoning inleiden, na de film gaat hij in gesprek met De Cinema-programmator Joyce Palmers.

🩷 Yes, yes, yes… We are honouring Marilyn Monroe’s legacy this summer, starting next week!

In the musical GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES, Monroe plays a showgirl on a transatlantic cruise to Paris. Her rendition of the original musical number “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” in a pink dress is a quintessential pop culture moment and has been recreated by many artists, including Madonna and Beyoncé (and even Ryan Gosling as Barbie’s Ken).

Next to this wonderful classic, we’re also screening Jean Negulesco’s HOW TO MARRY A MILLIONAIRE (1953), Otto Preminger’s RIVER OF NO RETURN (1954), Billy Wilder’s SOME LIKE IT HOT (1959), John Huston’s THE MISFITS (1961), and Nicolas Roeg’s INSIGNIFICANCE (1985).

"What became of the horse?"

In Turin, 1889, Friedrich Nietzsche embraced a whipped horse and lost his mind forever. History tells us what became of the philosopher, but Hungarian master Béla Tarr asks the question no one else did in this monumental final film.

Set on a desolate, storm-swept plain, we follow six days in the life of a coachman, his daughter, and their recalcitrant horse. Their existence is reduced to a monotonous cadence of primal rituals—fetching water, battling the elements, and eating a single, scalding hot potato.

THE TURIN HORSE is the ultimate “un-creation” of the world: where the universe was built in six days, Tarr dismantles it in six. As the wind howls and the light itself vanishes, what remains is an uncompromising, hypnotic masterpiece about the sheer weight of existence.

SAVE THE DATE

Op woensdag 3 juni presenteren we Soirée Burez, een exclusieve avond waarin de Antwerpse broers Jens Burez (set designer en videograaf) en Athos Burez (fotograaf en kunstenaar) hun cinematografisch universum openen voor het publiek. Als art directors ontwikkelen ze samen een uitgesproken visuele taal op het snijvlak van film, opera en beeldende kunst. Hun eerdere transformatie van De Foyer van Cinema 2, geïnspireerd door David Lynch, CABIRIA en Nicolas Winding Refn, vormt de context voor deze avond.

Ze zullen dit doen met AMADEUS (1984), een exuberant kostuumdrama dat breekt met de klassieke biopic. De film ontvouwt zich als een scherp portret van jaloezie, obsessie en genialiteit door het leven van Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart te vertellen via zijn rivaal Antonio Salieri. Mozart verschijnt niet als verheven genie, maar als grillige, bijna punkachtige outsider.

Na de vertoning op 3 juni volgt een feestelijke receptie en de inauguratie van de foyer, die ze zelf ontwierpen, als moment om de samenwerking tussen de broers Burez en De Cinema te vieren.

We’re pairing the ultra-iconic SCREAM, which sparked the 90s slasher revival, with the underrated I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER. Two films written by Kevin Williamson, who also wrote numerous SCREAM sequels and THE FACULTY.

Xander De Rycke komt naar De Cinema en neemt mee... zijn grote liefde voor Jackie Chan en diens grondlegende martial arts-films.

Omdat er weinig beter is dan samen kijken hoe Jackie zichzelf kapot maakt voor ons entertainment, koos Xander voor de actieklassieker POLICE STORY (1985) die de sterrencarrière van Jackie Chan definitief lanceerde.

In deze film speelt Chan een politieagent die een drugsnetwerk moet oprollen, maar hierdoor diep in de problemen komt. Fysieke comedy, legendarische stunts en een roekeloze actieheld: het zit allemaal in deze iconische jaren 1980-film!

Voor de film doet Xander zijn liefde voor Jackie Chan nog uit de doeken!
