De Cinema verwent dagelijks filmliefhebbers met een uitgebreid programma. De Cinema is een samenwerking tussen M HKA en De Studio.

Before Abbas Kiarostami became a master of world cinema, he spent years filming inside Iranian classrooms. HOMEWORK stems from this defining era. This portrait from 1989 builts on a disarmingly simple premise: Kiarostami asks young primary school students in Tehran about their daily school assignments.

What begins as an ordinary survey quickly turns into an unfiltered look at childhood during wartime. The children speak candidly about their struggles, from illiterate parents to harsh punishment. When asked about their future dream jobs, many blurt out the exact same answer: "To kill Saddam." It is a heartbreaking glimpse into how war and fear seep into the youngest minds.

HOMEWORK is a striking, courageous documentary that remains deeply moving and surprisingly sharp. Presented as part of BACK 2 SCHOOL, a film series exploring the ongoing dialogue between students, teachers, and parents.

In honour of its 60th birthday, BLACK GIRL returns to the big screen in a new 4K restoration! Ousmane Sembène ’s stirring feature debut reveals the agony of the postcolonial experience.

Sembène is often called the father of African cinema. His austere visual style and elliptical narrative structure show how identity can be erased precisely within the most domestic of spaces. He transforms a deceptively simple plot—about a young Senegalese woman who moves to France to work for a wealthy white family and finds that life in their small apartment becomes a prison, both figuratively and literally—into a complexly layered critique of the lingering colonialist mindset of a supposedly postcolonial world.

Featuring a moving central performance by M’Bissine Thérèse Diop, BLACK GIRL is a harrowing human drama as well as a radical political statement. Sixty years later, the film’s moral force remains just as urgent, precisely because Sembène shows how colonial relations do not disappear with independence, but continue to shape language, labour, ownership, and the intimate relations of everyday life.
