What if your next medieval world already existed? 🏰🎬

High above the Danube, Kreuzenstein Castle offers exactly the kind of setting filmmakers usually have to build from scratch. Its towers, courtyards, stone walls and historic interiors make it a striking backdrop for period drama, fantasy and adventure. And with Vienna only around 30 minutes away, this cinematic location is surprisingly close to one of Austria’s main production hubs.

International productions have already discovered its potential: Kreuzenstein Castle served as a filming location for Season of the Witch, starring Nicolas Cage, Netflix's The Witcher and Disney+'s Shardlake as well as the second season of Sky's The Day of the Jackal. What makes Kreuzenstein especially interesting is its history: after the original medieval castle was destroyed, it was reconstructed from the late 19th century onwards, creating an elaborate historic setting filled with authentic architectural elements and collections.

💬 Period drama, fantasy or adventure – which genre would you shoot at Kreuzenstein Castle? Tell us in the comments.

Sustainable filmmaking is gaining momentum in Austria. 🌿🎬
Sustainability is no longer a trend in film production – it's becoming the new standard. 🌍

Across Austria's film industry, sustainability is becoming an increasingly important part of film production. One example is the FISAplus Green Bonus, which rewards productions that meet defined Green Filming criteria with an additional financial incentive.
Productions that meet the defined Green Filming criteria can receive an additional 5% Green Bonus, increasing the FISAplus incentive from 30% to up to 35%.

Sustainable filmmaking includes measures such as:

· 🌿 Working with a certified Green Film Consultant
· 🚛 Reducing transport emissions and avoiding unnecessary flights
· ♻️ Reusing sets, props and costumes wherever possible
· ⚡ Using renewable electricity, energy-efficient equipment and sustainable catering with regional suppliers

At FILM in AUSTRIA, we're happy to help you navigate Austria's funding opportunities and discover how sustainable filmmaking can benefit both your production and the environment.

💬 How important are sustainability incentives when choosing a filming location? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

New research confirms: Film tourism creates measurable value for destinations.
A breathtaking filming location doesn't just captivate audiences on screen – it can also inspire them to visit in real life: The first results of the Film Tourism Study, presented at the Salzburg Media Summit, underline not only the tourism potential of film productions but also their contribution to regional value creation and the broader film economy.

The study shows:
📍 Filming locations achieve significant media visibility with measurable effects.
🧠 Repeated, positive exposure increases a destination's attractiveness – a phenomenon known as the Mere-Exposure Effect.
📈 Successful productions can generate advertising value in the seven-figure range, with additional potential through targeted destination marketing.

Five key factors influence success:
· Title selection
· Cast
· Visibility of the filming location
· Distribution
· Format and media presence

Best practice: Der Bergdoktor demonstrates how the right combination of these factors can create long-term destination awareness and tourism value. For film commissions and destinations alike, the message is clear: film productions don't just tell stories – they create lasting economic and promotional impact.

💬 Which factor do you think has the biggest influence on turning a filming location into a travel destination? We'd love to hear your thoughts.

Tyrol: One region. Countless cinematic backdrops. 🎬🏔️

From dramatic glaciers and alpine peaks to medieval streets, historic castles and modern mountain towns, Tyrol offers an extraordinary variety of filming locations within a remarkably compact area. It's no coincidence that productions such as the James Bond blockbuster SPECTRE chose Tyrol as the backdrop for some of their most iconic scenes.

Why filmmakers choose Tyrol:
· Spectacular alpine scenery with year-round filming opportunities
· Historic towns, castles and authentic villages within short distances
· Experienced local film professionals and production support
· Excellent accessibility and infrastructure for international productions

Whether you're scouting for an action sequence, a historical drama or breathtaking establishing shots, Tyrol offers the versatility to bring your story to life. At FILM in AUSTRIA, we support international productions with location scouting, local expertise and the right partners from the first idea to the final shot.

🎥 Swipe through the carousel and discover why Tyrol deserves a place on your next location shortlist.

Looking back on a few intense days at Filmfest München, one thing stood out: Austria was not just in the room, it was on the screen. 🎬

At the Netflix brunch, three productions with an Austrian footprint were front and center. Crooks Season 2, shot in Vienna, Murder Mindfully season 2, and Eat Pray Bark, both filmed across Tyrol. All three are streaming worldwide right now, and show what Austria brings to a production.

That is why we came to Munich. On Sunday we hosted our own FILM in AUSTRIA reception, bringing Austria's regional film commissions and international guests together. At 36 degrees, and still a full house, plus a strong run of industry panels along the way.

🤝 Around one table: Vienna Film Commission, Cine Tirol Film Commission , Cinestyria Filmcommission and Fonds and Carinthia Film Commission

Vienna is more than a beautiful backdrop – it’s a city where many cinematic worlds come together.

From the romantic streets of 'Before Sunrise' to the shadowy atmosphere of 'The Third Man', Vienna has inspired filmmakers for decades.

Historic settings such as the Belvedere Palace appeared in films like 'Woman in Gold', while modern Vienna provided the stage for the spectacular opera sequence in 'Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation'.
Within a very small radius, the city offers an incredible range of film locations.

Whether you’re looking for historic drama, contemporary storytelling, romance or noir, Vienna can transform into many different worlds on screen. One city. Many worlds.

Planning your next production in Vienna, or elsewhere in Austria? Get in touch with FILM in AUSTRIA for location insights and on-the-ground support. We support international productions throughout the entire process.

AI, film, tech and culture, colliding for six days at SXSW London. FILM in AUSTRIA was right there in the mix, as part of an economic mission with the WKO.

A special highlight: Michelle Obama live on stage, with powerful thoughts on leadership and resilience. And plenty more input from over 800 speakers across diverse fields. A few of our personal favorites:

🎬 The Russo brothers, who brought us the Marvel universe
🚀 Space engineer Catriona Chambers
💻 MetaLab CEO Luke Des Cotes
🍦 Iconic brands like Ben & Jerry's

Completely different worlds, and every one of them got us thinking about where film goes next.

We're heading home inspired, better connected across borders, and grateful for every conversation along the way. More convinced than ever: in this industry, we get further together.
