Fabulamundi. Playwriting Europe In 2017 Fabulamundi won the UBU Prize as Special Project for the relevance and the importance of its action. Fabulamundi partnership is composed by: PAV s.n.c.

“Fabulamundi Playwriting Europe” is a cooperation project among theatres, festivals and cultural organisations from 10 EU Countries (Italy, France, Germany, Spain, Romania, Austria, Belgium, Serbia, Poland and the Czech Republic). Fabulamundi Playwriting Europe has been extensively working with European artists, professionals and institutions along the almost ten years project, supporting the careers of the playwrights invited to step into the network and promoting a diverse, equal, gender-balanced, plural, sustainable ecosystem for creativity. Favola sismica by Matteo Caniglia, developed through PLAYGROUND, has begun its series of public sharings across Lazio 🎭

Finalist for the 58th Premio Riccione per il Teatro, the text was developed through a research and rehearsal process led by Fabiana Iacozzilli, with artistic collaboration by Cesare Del Beato.

❄️ Set near the Arctic Circle, between Russia and Finland, the play begins with an unexpected discovery and moves through disappearance, memory, myth, science, and spirituality. The “earthquake” becomes a fracture running through landscape, time, memory, and the body.

With Raffaele De Vincenzi, Federica Quartana, Samuele Satta, and Jessica Sedda, sound and music by Samuele Cestola, and lighting consultation by Luigi Biondi.

Following the first public sharing at Teatro Biblioteca Quarticciolo, the project will continue across theatres in Lazio until 18 December 2026.

A PAV project within Fabulamundi Playwriting Europe and PLAYGROUND, developed in collaboration with Teatro di Roma – Teatro Nazionale, with the support of the Italian Ministry of Culture and Regione Lazio.

Fabulamundi’s Spotlight 💡

Arădeanca by New Voices writer Elise Wilk comes to the National Theatre in Bucharest on 23 October 🇷🇴

Directed by Cristian Ban the play takes its title from Arădeanca, the famous doll factory in Arad whose dolls were part of childhood for generations of Romanians.

Moving through the final decades of communist Romania, the play follows the women who worked at the factory and the lives, ambitions, and pressures that unfolded around them.

At the centre of the story is the Nadia doll, inspired by gymnast Nadia Comăneci, which becomes a symbol of hope, perfection, and the expectations of the time.

Fabulamundi’s Spotlight 💡

A space dedicated to celebrating Fabulamundi’s playwrights and creatives.

Congratulations to New Voices playwright Bernhard Studlar whose radio play Antikapitalistisches Globalbrot has been nominated at this year’s Berliner Hörspielfestival for both Das glühende Knopfmikro and Das zündende Mikro.

The piece finds two men sitting in a car at a drive-in, discussing how small independent bakeries might just take over the world. Sourdough included 🍞

The nominated works will be presented at the festival on 18 September at the Akademie der Künste in Berlin.

A space dedicated to promoting Fabulamundi’s playwrights and creatives 💡

‘Tu em vas prometre una història d’amor’ by Helena Tornero, one of the playwrights from the latest edition of New Voices, was recently presented at the ACT Shanghai Contemporary Theatre Festival 🇨🇳

Directed by Israel Solà, the production was performed at the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre on 5 and 6 September, with Ester Cort, Fermí Delfa, Montse Esteve, Sandra Pujol, and Roger Torns.

We first saw the play last year at Sala Beckett in Barcelona during our final New Voices group meeting, so it was especially lovely to see the work reach audiences in China!

Helena also joined Víctor Muñoz from Sala Beckett for a conversation on contemporary Catalan playwriting as part of the festival 🎭

🇮🇹 Our partner SHORT THEATRE is back in Rome for the festival’s 21st edition, running from 3–12 September across venues including La Pelanda, Teatro India, Teatro Vittoria, Cinema Troisi, MACRO, and MUCIV 🏛️

This year’s programme brings together more than 65 events and around 40 companies and artists from across Europe and beyond, spanning performance, dance, sound, visual work, talks, workshops, and more 🎭

This week, our partner Mousson D'Été returns to Pont-à-Mousson for six days devoted to contemporary playwriting 🎭

From 21–27 August, the festival brings together new French and international texts through staged readings, performances, talks, and its European Summer University, all taking place around the Abbaye des Prémontrés.

We’re especially happy to see New Voices playwright Oriol Morales i Pujolar in this year’s programme with Insectes, translated into French by Laurent Gallardo and directed by Véronique Bellegarde.

Set in an almost abandoned rural village, the play follows two former friends who reunite to imagine what future might still be possible for the place they once knew.

La Mousson has long been a place where writers, translators, directors, performers, students, and audiences can meet around new work, often at the very moment a text is beginning to find its life on stage.

It’s been one year since we closed the final chapter of Fabulamundi New Voices 2023/2026 🎭

For three years, 19 playwrights and organisations across Europe worked together, travelled, exchanged texts and ideas, and met new audiences along the way. We ran over 60 creative writing workshops, followed playwrights across borders through Cross the Map, and asked them to reflect on home, identity and their creative practice in In a New Light 🎥

New Voices officially ended a year ago, but many of the relationships that came out of it are still very much part of what we do today.

So, one year on, a little look back at the people, partner organisations, and places that made New Voices what it was 💛

✏️ Playwriting takes shape through dialogue, experimentation, and its encounter with the stage. This was the starting point for the first event of Le Stanze della Scrittura, hosted by Sala Beckett in Barcelona with Fausto Paravidino and Davide Carnevali.

A rich conversation on the ways playwriting continues to write and rewrite the present, and on theatre as a living space where artists and audience constantly meet.

Thank you to the Italian Cultural Institute of Barcelona for making this first encounter possible.

For the past ten years, Foreign Affairs’ Theatre Translator Mentorship has helped new voices travel across languages and reach new stages 🎭

This year, after funding fell through, its seventh edition could not go ahead. Now Foreign Affairs is raising £10,000 to make sure the mentorship does not stop here.

Foreign Affairs is part of the Fabulamundi community, and we would love to see this programme continue.
